What are the responsibilities and job description for the Math Tutor position at Temple Grandin School?
Position Summary
The Math Tutor is responsible to support students in the TGS math curriculum, from pre-Algebra through pre-Calculus, using resources provided by the school. S/he will primarily work with students 1:1, but should be comfortable instructing and solving problems with small groups of 4-8 students. TGS students are generally motivated learners and strong mathematical thinkers, but may have gaps in their understanding due to challenges in prior learning environments. The ideal Math Tutor will be patient, calm, and enthusiastic about math content at all levels. S/he will work closely with TGS student support and teaching staff to engage students in active learning and problem solving, including the use of digital platforms.
Essential Responsibilities
Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Support student engagement with instructional materials that employ active learning and problem solving
- Use relevant technology to support students of all abilities
- Support positive student behavior in the classroom by following TGS classroom routines
- Provide 1:1 support as needed to assist students in completing independent work
- Provide appropriate feedback on student work
- Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching/support strategies
- Communicate necessary information regularly to students and parents regarding student progress
Knowledge, Skills and Ability Required:
- A.A. Degree, major or minor in Mathematics or related field (B.S./M.S. preferred)
- Experience tutoring or teaching middle and high school students (experience with neurodiverse students a plus)
- Ability to maintain confidential information about students
- Proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis
- Agreement with the academic goals and philosophy of Temple Grandin School, as outlined in the TGS Student Parent Handbook.
Working Conditions
Physical Requirements
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The individual in this position needs to move about the school environment (indoors and outdoors) frequently to maintain visual supervision of assigned students at all times.
Work Environment: Classroom/office environment with some outdoor supervision of students required. Moderate noise.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
