What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production Supervisor (2nd Shift) position at Tenneco?

The Production Supervisor oversees all manufacturing-related activities in their designated area on their assigned shift. A Production Supervisor is responsible for leading, developing and managing performance of hourly Line Leaders and their respective Team Members. Production Supervisors will guide Line Leaders in optimizing resources in the most efficient manner consistent with standardized work procedures, work instructions, quality standards, and safety parameters. The Production Supervisor ensures Line Leaders maintain standardized work processes, train Team Members in proper methods, utilize BOS, Lean, 5S, and TMS tools to achieve objectives. Please note this position sits on second shift (2 p.m. to 10 p.m.).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads by example and reinforces the safety practices while enforcing Tenneco safety policies.
  • Holds Line Leaders accountable for their role in creating and promoting the Tenneco safety culture.
  • Conducts daily and weekly safety inspections and training to ensure departmental operations and personnel are in compliance with OSHA and corporate safety guidelines.
  • Educates Line Leaders and Team Members on Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Investigates, reports, and communicates all accidents, injuries and/or illnesses and near misses.
  • Mentors Line Leaders in problem-solving, including the creation and maintenance of accident/countermeasure charts.
  • Observes Team Members’ techniques as they perform the job functions
  • Champions the 5S process and ensures standards are maintained for your area of responsibility.
  • Confirms Team Members are trained to the latest revision of Standardized Work and that the standardized work training matrix is updated to document all training.
  • Completes the Layered Process Audit (yellow card audit) to ensure that standardized work is followed.
  • Champions “Continuous Improvement” of Standardized Work through coaching of the Team Leader for all Type 2 Problem Solving.
  • Coaches Line Leaders to create Job Breakdown Sheets (JBS) and standardize work processes across all shifts through sign-offs.
  • Ensures that all Team Members are trained using the Job Instruction Methodology (JIM).
  • Conducts daily paired observation with Line Leaders and follows up journal reviews to identify coaching needs.
  • Leads monthly Line Leader meeting.
  • Communicates with the next shift and relays all issues/concerns resulting from your shift’s operations.
  • Provides timely and effective feedback to help Team Members strengthen specific skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem.
  • Assures escalation of the issues of the boundary area on an as-needed basis.
  • Responds as primary support to Line Leader calls when needed and escalates to appropriate support area when necessary.
  • Maintains relevant production records.
  • Assists Operations Manager in preparing the annual budget and monitoring department budget and spending.
  • Monitors production status hourly to ensure Line Leaders can address abnormalities to sustain production.
  • Utilizes the weekly production schedule to order supplies as required.
  • Oversee production setup.
  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises the activities of Team Members to meet production schedules and to hold them accountable for their performance.
  • Communicates with other functional groups to coordinate activities on the shift.
  • Confirms quality of materials and finished goods.
  • Establishes or adjusts work plan to meet customer demand.
  • Reviews and approves proposed countermeasures from by Team Leader to improve cell performance and coach implementation.
  • Follows overtime procedure to assign Team Members to work on weekends and holidays.
  • Participates in all applicable elements of the ISO 14001 and TS 16949 standards to ensure the assigned area is continuously prepared for internal and external audits.
  • Escalates issues to ensure proper disposition and documentation of suspect material.
  • Participates in all root cause analysis of non-conformances in their area of responsibility.
  • Leads actions to countermeasure a problem’s root cause, monitors the results and standardizes the changes made to correct the problem.
  • Is proactive in resolving problems in the cell and escalates the need for assistance as necessary.
  • “Go see” and observes problems firsthand, investigates and ensures an effective understanding of the facts/data.
  • Solves problems utilizing the “scientific method.”
  • Deepens process learning through rapid low-cost trials/experiments to solve problems.
  • Develops, supports, and monitors activities that foster teamwork within the group.
  • Builds cross-functional working relationships to achieve work and team goals.
  • Supports a positive work environment that is free of harassment, discrimination, or other unlawful practices.
  • Immediately escalates any unlawful or improper practices to their Value Stream Leader and/or Human Resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business or technical field preferred with 1-2 years related leadership experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess ability to read, write, and perform basic math skills (includes basic algebra, fractions, geometry).
  • Must be able to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram forms.
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, make minor adjustments and/or perform preventive maintenance on metal bending, welding, forming, fabrication, and assembly equipment is preferable.
  • Experience in effective use of quality-control gauges/equipment, inventory systems, blueprint interpretation, computer applications, and SPC charting where applicable.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence.
  • Strong PC skills in applications of word processing, spreadsheets and PowerPoint.

  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles, liquids including oil, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  • Noise levels in the work environment are usually loud, requiring hearing protection.
  • Temperatures will vary in the factory (hot to cold).
  • The workspaces will sometimes be somewhat crowded
  • Personal protective equipment is required in all manufacturing areas including, but not limited to, hearing and eye protection, and steel-toed safety shoes.
