The Role
Based in High Point, NC, the Director of HR will be a key member of the organization working closely with members of senior management to develop and execute a human resource strategy. The Director of HR will impact the organization through effective leadership and guidance of the human resource function in areas such as recruiting, performance management, training, succession planning, culture enhancement, M&A integration, benefits and compensation, communications, and employee relations.
The Director of HR thinks strategically, executes tactfully, demonstrates strong judgment, and handles complex and sensitive issues with the highest level of professionalism. The Director of HR will serve as the HR management expert providing leadership, communications, and oversight to ensure that the business remains in compliance with federal and state regulations. This position will report to the CFO.
Develop and execute TNS’s talent management strategy by working directly with the senior leadership team to build the capabilities and processes needed to support the strategy.- Direct all recruiting and retention programs working collaboratively with leadership to ensure current and future staffing needs are understood and balanced.
- Directly manage and fully leverage the company’s HR technology portal and direct all processes within it including payroll, performance management, recruiting, employee engagement, and others.
- Provide leadership and guidance to the business teams on employee relations issues to improve operating performance and retention. Counsel employees and/or managers as needed regarding personnel issues.
- Coordinate and manage all compensation and benefits programs to ensure they are competitive and aligned with the company’s financial targets. Analyze, review and propose compensation and/or benefits changes that better position the company to meet goals remain competitive, and best engage employees.
- Lead the payroll process, ensuring accurate and efficient payroll services to employees.
- Design and administer benefit plans, policies, guidelines and oversee the annual benefit program renewal process.
- Work collaboratively with finance to develop labor budgets/plans that add value and accomplish business objectives.
- Direct corporate talent management and succession planning processes, including identifying capability gaps, and building plans to improve performance.
- Coach, train, and support managers to enhance leader effectiveness. Provide guidance on coaching, mentoring, training, development, rewards, recognition, and performance management.
- Assist in identifying and creating development plans for high potentials and successors.
- Lead the annual performance evaluation and salary review cycles (goal setting, consistent coaching, and year-end reviews). Lead the HR integration committee and process for all acquisitions.
- Ensure compliance with all legal and government reporting regulations affecting the HR function including EEO, Affirmative Action, FMLA, ADA, etc. Manage the preparation of information requested or required for compliance. Act as primary contact with outside governmental agencies.
- Help build and motivate high-performing branch-level teams and drive standardization of best management HR processes across all locations.
- Determine measurable six-month, 18-month, and three-year goals with corresponding action plans for operational improvements with clear, deliverable-focused targets grounded in solid operational metrics.
- Work cross-functionally with the senior leadership team to achieve Terra Nova’s strategic HR goals related to retention, employee satisfaction, and acquisition integration.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, organizational leadership, or another business-focused degree; MBA and HR-specific certifications such as SHRM-CP are highly desirable.
- A minimum of 8 years of Human Resources experience in progressively responsible leadership/management roles; 10 years experience managing people.
- Human resources-related experience (or business leader experience) including 5-10 years of experience in areas such as talent acquisition, talent management, learning and development, employee rewards, and employee relations is desirable.
- Prior experience with integration of human capital resulting from M&A including change management and process improvement preferred.
- Experience creating and executing tactical HR programs that solve people/business problems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well with a wide variety of audiences, including hourly workers, supervisors, site managers, executives, and community leaders.
- Demonstrated experience working successfully with blue collar employees in a field service environment.
- Demonstrated experience building a positive and productive culture of hourly and lower salary workers, including coaching, teaching, and talent development and leadership.
- Able to prioritize multiple tasks, take initiative, resolve conflicts, be creative, coordinate, and make decisions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- A strong ability to collect, manipulate, and analyze data (operational, employee customer, supplier, etc.) to support decision making.
- An understanding of ‘best in class’ shared services and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with respect to employee engagement and customer service in a logistics based, service-oriented business.
- Must be comfortable working in a dynamic business setting and managing tight deadlines. Must be able to self-manage nontraditional work schedules.
- Prior experience in industrial cleaning, environmental services, and waste transportation and disposal a plus but not a pre-requisite.
