Job Description

Terracon has an opportunity for a Construction Materials Technician II to join our team in Tempe, AZ. Our Construction Materials Technician II will perform various laboratory testing on construction materials such as soils, concrete, masonry, and asphalt. You will tabulate, prepare and submit reports as work is performed and communicate with Project Managers and other key stakeholders regarding testing results. Testing is performed in our in-house Terracon laboratory. You will have the opportunity to travel to mobile labs and perform testing on special projects. Successful candidates will receive in-depth technical training and professional certifications as they advance in the position.

Essential Role and Responsibilities:
  • Perform testing in accordance with standard methods for soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry and asphalt.
  • Prepare clear documentation of test data using paper forms and on laptop or tablet device; submit findings in accordance with standard test methods to the project manager.
  • Effectively communicate testing and inspection results, verbally and in writing.
  • Develop skills and talents to take on progressively increasing roles of responsibility in work assignments.
  • Ensure that all assigned testing equipment and tools are properly calibrated and maintained.
  • Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work. Reports any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Maintain quality standards on all projects.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 6 months experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history

Preferred Requirements:
  • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience or the equivalent in training and related experience
  • Experienced and effective with laptop computer use such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
    • ATTI Asphalt or Soils and Aggregates
    • Concrete Strength Testing Technician
  • Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
    • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in one or more of the following categories: Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
    • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in one or more of the following categories: Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist
    • ACI Laboratory Masonry Testing.
    • ACI Field Grade 1
    • ACI Laboratory Testing Technician 1
  • Successful completion of related internal safety and technical certifications

Other national, regional, state, and local Materials related certifications requiring experience and written examination will also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.

Requirements:

  • Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel
  • ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
    • Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
    • Concrete Strength Testing Technician
    • Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
  • Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history
Preferred Certification:
  • Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
    • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in one or more of the following categories: Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
    • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in one or more of the following categories: Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist
    • ICC certification in one or more of the following categories: Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding.
    • American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI)
    • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in more than one of the following areas: Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
  • Other national, regional, state, and local Materials related certifications requiring experience and written examination will also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
