Job Description

Are you an ecologist, biologist, or someone with a similar background that desires to build and grow a team? Terracon is seeking to hire a staff scientist to support and grow environmental planning projects within the State of North Dakota and surrounding regions. This position will be a blend of field surveys, leading field teams, data entry and management, statistical data analysis, and technical report writing. Field work will be performed outdoors in changing weather conditions. This is an excellent opportunity for a mid-level professional looking to grow their career.

General Responsibilities:

The staff scientist will work closely with senior personnel across the region to grow the business and to deliver wetland delineation and permitting support, threatened and endangered species assessments (e.g., habitat assessments and avian and wildlife surveying/monitoring), and support NEPA environmental document preparation (e.g., Categorical Exclusions and Environmental Assessments). The staff scientist may coordinate with archaeologists and other specialists to deliver multidisciplinary work products for clients. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with other environmental projects, including Phase I/II environmental site assessments, remediation oversight, hazardous materials surveying, tank closure assessments, storm water management, and site planning and permitting.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
  • Proficient scientific professional responsible for conducting site testing and making recommendations for systems design on smaller projects of minimal complexity.
  • May assist more senior scientists/engineers on large, more complex projects.
  • Performs site visits, field observations and field data collection or assignments.
  • Implements technical requirements to complete client projects by directing and supervising field staff to sample, test and collect data and/or document site activities.
  • Responsible for developing written proposals to clients for approval by senior level professionals.
  • Evaluates moderately complex laboratory and field data and assembles in written reports.
  • May serve as team member and participate in meetings and communications with client pertaining to specific projects/tasks.
  • May oversee work performed by lower level scientists/engineers and Technicians.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or other related science field and a minimum of 3 years’ related experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 7 years’ related experience.
  • Certification in field of expertise.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

Preferred but not required:
  • Demonstrated understanding of federal, state and/or local regulations (e.g., National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act)
  • Wetland Professional Certification
  • Experience conducting Dakota Skipper surveys
  • Experience using GIS software
  • Ability to travel out of town 20%
  • Part 107 Drone Commercial License (Remote Pilot Certificate)
