What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vehicle Motion Controls Engineer position at Tesla?
What to Expect:
The Tesla motion control systems team works on the conception and design of control algorithms (specifically, controlling brake, suspension, steering, aero, and powertrain systems). The control algorithms at Tesla are strongly physics oriented, so the role requires an individual that can apply first-principles analysis and advanced control techniques for the conception and implementation of vehicle motion control systems. Some well-known systems our team has developed and released include multi-motor traction control (dual & tri motor), Tesla's in-house stability control including under & oversteer mitigations, adaptive suspension damping, trailer sway control, driveline oscillation control, and autopilot actuator controls.
What You'll Do
This position requires a high degree of engineering creativity and intuition in the development of novel, industry leading chassis controls. This role will also require working cross-functionally with a number of various groups including Chassis Hardware, Vehicle Modeling, Firmware, Systems Integration, and Autopilot teams. Depending on the project, your responsibilities will include:
-
Evaluate novel subsystems related to vehicle motion to inform product decisions
-
Develop control-oriented models of chassis systems for analysis and estimation
-
Develop control algorithms to maximize system capability and flexibility
-
Work with firmware/integration engineers to implement, test, debug, and calibrate your algorithms in simulation and in car
-
Develop analysis tools to evaluate performance of these algorithms on proving grounds and in the customer & engineering fleets
What You'll Bring:
-
Experience in fundamental vehicle dynamics theory, specifically low and medium fidelity models to be used within control algorithms
-
Have knowledge in linear systems analysis, stability, and controller design
-
Physics knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems
-
Capable of analyzing vehicle performance in Matlab/Simulink or another comparable software
-
Strong communication and preference for working in teams
-
Expertise in control estimation techniques and optimal control
-
Experience with software packages and programming languages like Matlab/Simulink, C/C , Python
-
Basic experience, understanding, and intuition for the physics of electric drive-trains
-
Greater than 3 years experience with controls system development, modeling, and implementation
-
MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or equivalent
