Tetra Tech is currently seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist/ Human Health Risk Assessor with extensive experience conducting human health risk assessments in accordance with applicable guidance and requirements, especially related to CERCLA/Superfund sites. Experience conducting and knowledge of ecological risk assessments is also preferred.

Your Role:

The ideal candidate will provide support on a variety of environmental projects, including remedial investigations/feasibility studies, site investigations, and training/technical support assignments. This position will involve providing technical support to U.S. EPA contracts supporting the Superfund and Brownfields programs. Other projects could include support to emergency response, site assessment and cleanup projects.

Primary work will involve preparing and conducting technical review of risk assessments. Anticipated work also includes preparing and conducting technical reviews of other project deliverables, including RI/FS reports, RODs, and other investigation, cleanup, response action decision documents. Work may also include managing projects, overseeing or supporting data management tasks, providing technical support, and presenting training classes.

  • Directs and supervises technical assignments and manages entire projects or specific elements of projects;
  • Acts as lead human health risk assessor on proposals and projects;
  • Interacts with clients and regulators as subject matter expert;
  • Analyzes large environmental datasets, conducts or directs statistical analyses, and prepares tables, figures, and other data exhibits;
  • Reviews and interprets environmental and toxicological studies and reports;
  • Conducts exposure and human health risk assessments in accordance with federal (EPA RAGS) and state guidance;
  • Supports remedial strategy development for contaminated sites;
  • Performs analyses to support allocation of remedial costs and damages among responsible parties;
  • Develops sampling and analysis plans for various media, including soil, groundwater, sediment, and indoor air;
  • Prepares written documents such as letters, memoranda, proposals, workplans and investigative reports

Qualifications:

10-15 years of experience in conducting, authoring, directing, and conducting technical review of multi-media human health risk assessments with increasing levels of project complexity and responsibility. Strong Superfund/RCRA-related risk assessment experience is required. Previous experience working on EPA projects with an emphasis on Superfund sites is required. Knowledge of federal and state regulations is also required. Experience with data quality/evaluation/validation, hazardous waste, site investigations, site remediation, and field sampling is highly desirable. Must be detailed-oriented.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills:
  • Preparing human health risk assessments according to Superfund guidance and CERCLA requirements, including preparing conceptual site models;
  • Extensive experience in scoping, managing, and conducting each of the stages of the CERCLA process.
o Development of work plans and QAPPs (including evaluating sampling strategies and appropriateness of data for risk)
o Completion of projects through feasibility studies and Records of Decision
  • Conducting analytical data evaluation/validation and preparing data quality objectives and quality assurance project plans;
  • Preparing and conducting technical reviews of reports;
  • Overseeing data management activities, including knowledge of EPA databases (e.g., Scribe and EQuIS)
  • Experience with risk communication with clients, stakeholders, and at conferences and professional organizations including presenting complex technical information in a concise and accurate manner
  • Project management, including budget and schedule tracking and maintenance
  • Maintenance of positive client relationships.

Education and Certifications:

At least a B.S. in Biology, Ecology, or other related environmental science degree required. MS in public health, toxicology, or related preferred.

Physical Demands:

Primarily office work. Some fieldwork may take place that could involve visiting a Superfund or similar hazardous waste site.

Work Environment:

Work will be primarily from office or home office (with proper connectivity and authorization) locations. Some travel (up to 25%) may be needed occasionally to visit project sites, participate in meetings, and meet with clients.
