Job TitleEditor Agency Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Department Emergency Services Training Institute Proposed Minimum Salary$3,583.34 monthly Job LocationCollege Station, Texas Job TypeStaff Job Description The Technical Writer (Business Title: Editor) will join a team of curriculum experts developing online and face-to-face courses at the Emergency Services Training Institute (ESTI) Division of the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. Our curriculum staff maintain an archive of several hundred courses designed for a wide range of audiences in the emergency services, ranging from brand new recruits earning their first certifications and experienced rescue and hazmat specialists to senior elected officials learning to manage resources during a major disaster. The Technical Writer works closely with instructional design specialists and graphic designers to ensure consistency across all related documentation and compliance with agency curriculum requirements and any applicable style guides and templates. The Technical Writer also assists in laying out material for print publication. The Technical Writer will work with the Curriculum Manager to establish project requirements and track and report project progress while working within the established budget and timeline limitations. This position will report to the Curriculum Manager. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Technical Communication, English, Communications, Journalism, or other applicable field (equivalency: will consider an Associate’s degree in Technical Communication, English, Communications, Journalism, or other applicable field with three years of related experience in technical writing or a High School Diploma or GED with five years of related experience in technical writing) One year of related experience in technical editing to create manuals and technical documents, revise Power Point Presentations, and review online courses. Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver’s License Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Technical Communication, English, Communications, Journalism, or another related field Experience with Adobe FrameMaker Experience creating accessible documents (PDF, PowerPoint, and Word) Experience using the CommonLook plug-in for Adobe Acrobat Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing Ability to regularly use computer/keyboard Ability to sit for extended periods of time in an office environment Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. of office supplies and/or instructional materials with assistance Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications Advanced technical knowledge of English grammar and mechanics Ability to follow an editing style guide Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business documents and handbooks Highly developed written and oral communication skills Ability to present information clearly and concisely Ability to learn office and design software programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and Adobe FrameMaker to a high level of facility Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat for print production Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)/Section 508 accessibility standards Ability to work independently and manage time effectively Equipment: Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone Notifications: This position is security-sensitive. This position may require some travel up to 5%. This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends. This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures. All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements. Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages: Edit and format curriculum materials – 80%: Formats and edits all curriculum materials according to established processes using prescribed software Complies with the varying design requirements of applicable style guides and branding guides Ensures the accuracy and completeness of technical documentation Publishes and manages the distribution of print files for physical books and course resources Follows all TEEX guidelines for the protection of intellectual property Remediates electronic documents (PDFs and PowerPoint files) to make them accessible for screen readers Reviews, maintains, and archives electronic files as needed Participate as a member of curriculum development teams – 20%: Assists with the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of classroom and online training courses and materials Collaborates with instructional designers to ensure accuracy, validity, and purpose of training manual content Completes work in accordance with project timelines and constraints Provides status reports on projects and work assignments to supervisor as directed Performs all assignments with a positive and professional team approach, providing excellent customer service to both internal and external TEEX/ESTI customers Promotes a positive working environment that is respectful of others and allows honest feedback with open communication Additional Program/Division responsibilities: Participates in professional development opportunities and seeks personal growth Promotes and models the core values of the agency Maintains involvement with Agency Initiatives Maintains and safeguards assigned divisional equipment and property Maintains a professional appearance Maintains an organized workspace Performs additional work duties as assigned As part of the TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Division/HQ Department Head All positions are security-sensitive.
