What we want We are excited to announce this new opportunity to join the Department of Student Activities as our Student Development Specialist III. This position is responsible for the planning, advising, and implementation of major campus traditions and student government at Texas A&M university and will be the primary coordinator of advisor development and organization marketing within the Campus Engagement & Traditions area. This position will serve to as the primary advisor for multiple Student Government Association (SGA) committees, including the Gilbert Leadership Conference, Fish Aides, Ring Dance. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to serve as secondary advisor to Class Council organizations, SGA Exec positions, and SGA Committees, including the Aggie Recruitment Committee. Oversees SGA Advisor development, reports and assessments for our area, and supervises a student assistant. Overarchingly, the ideal candidate has a passion and drive for building and developing the SGA and Class Councils brands. Professional Development: $3,200/year budget starting in FY24 for professional development opportunities and conference attendance. Position details: Supervises - (1) Student Assistant Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three years’ experience in student affairs work or related specialty area, with two years of experience in Student Affairs. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Oral and written communication skills. Other Requirements and Factors: General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with students. Attends meetings and conferences concerning students and with student groups at times beyond usual working hours. Requires some evening and weekend work. Commitment to university’s and department’s core values. Ability to work nights and periodic weekends as needed. Preferred Education and Experience: Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education or related field. Two or more years as a Student Development Specialist II or other post-graduate experience in higher education, student affairs, or specific area(s) described in this position description. Significant student group advising, leadership training, and experience in the specific area(s) described in this position description. Essential Duties/Tasks Student Organization Advising - Serves as an Advisor to the Gilbert Leadership Conference, Fish Aides, and Ring Dance, high profile student organizations within the Student Government Association and Class Councils. Serves as secondary advisor to multiple SGA committees including CARPOOL and Aggie Recruitment Committee. Advising of a student group may include, but is not limited to, leadership development, risk management education, financial oversight, programming and logistics of events, marketing and communications, and other administrative tasks as required by the group or department. Advising –Program Administration & Oversight – SGA Organization Development - Is responsible for oversight of SGA committee and advisor development for Student Government Organizations. Manages, with support from student staff and student leadership, end of the year report, and SGA Banquet. Is responsible for committee advisor communication and development including, but not limited to, risk management education and community management. Supervision - Is responsible for direct supervision of a student assistant. Prioritized supervisory topics include, but are not limited to, SGA marketing, SGA branding, and area assessment. SGA and Class Councils Branding - Is responsible for building community and connectedness within the Student Government Association and Class Councils organizations. This includes, but is not limited to: planning events for the organizations, resource building, and establishing relationships between student organizations and existing campus resources.
