EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Accounting, Finance, or a related business major with 18 hours or more of accounting coursework;
OR
  • 8 hours or more of accounting coursework with qualifying experience as described above. Experience may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.

EXPERIENCE
1. Recent progressively responsible experience in journal entry preparation and review, and financial accounting and reporting;
2. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills;
3. High level of problem-solving ability;
4. Extensive experience with and proficiency in Excel;
5. Demonstrated knowledge of automated accounting systems;
6. Knowledge of professional standards, financial reporting, and accounting theory;
7. Ability to extract and work with large data sets;
8. Ability to consistently meet deadlines and to prioritize competing projects;
9. Strong oral and written communication skills;
10. Supervisory experience; and,
11. Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and management.

Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience with governmental accounting;
2. Certified Public Accountant (currently licensed);
3. Experience with an ERP system (SAP, Banner, PeopleSoft or USAS);
4. Experience with grant assignments;
5. Experience with capital asset accounting and reporting;
6. Familiarity with NACUBO terminology and reporting guidelines;
7. Experience with automated reporting tools (data warehouse);
8. Graduate degree in Accounting; and,
9. Minimum of five (5) years of recent progressively responsible experience in financial accounting.

Job Description
Perform advanced, professional accounting functions directly related to the integrity of the university’s financial reporting; ensure compliance with governmental GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) and other authoritative guidelines; support departmental planning and staff development; provide technical assistance to staff, supervise and coordinate deadline-driven assignments; prepare monthly and annual financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, and various ad-hoc reports; and propose updates to written procedures or process changes as needed to increase efficiency or compliance.

Job Duties
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting in accordance with professional standards, Federal, State, and university policies and procedures;
  • Provide supervision and guidance to others; conduct annual staff performance evaluations;
  • Review and verify the accuracy and appropriateness of journal entries, reconciliations, and a variety of other accounting reports and financial statements;
  • Support month-end and annual fiscal close by performing allocations and preparing journal entries and financial statements; prepare a variety of statutorily required reports;
  • Manage accounts receivable billings and advance process enhancements; manage accounting and reporting for construction projects, bond issues and related debt service;
  • Oversee and participate in the preparation of the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA);
  • Account and report for a variety of business units as needed; extract data, analyze financial transactions and reports; prepare spreadsheets and graphs to facilitate interpretation of data;
  • Conduct or manage special projects and develop or recommend accounting methods and procedures; prepare technical accounting position papers; develop and maintain written policies and procedures; identify changing requirements for management information needs;
  • Review account structure; interact with and provide information for internal and external auditors; develop complex, non-standard, financial reports and statements; perform other duties necessary for the effective operation of the department.

Some evening and weekend hours are necessary, with peak amounts of overtime during September and October for preparation of the annual financial report and fiscal year-end close-out.
