What are the responsibilities and job description for the Administrative Assistant/Legal Assistant position at Texido Law?
A full-time position will be open in mid to late July. The first 2-4 weeks will be spent learning from the current legal assistant, who is headed off to law school near the end of August. We are looking to get someone in place now so that the transition will be seamless, and can be somewhat flexible regarding start date.
This is a unique position, as the practice is growing out of necessity, but still small (2 attorneys, one assistant currently). It is unlike working for a larger firm in that you will typically have a say in how certain things operate. We encourage creativity and finding new solutions to problems. The ideal candidate will be a creative thinker who is committed to the success of the practice, as well as personal growth.
The position consists of general office work for two criminal defense attorneys in a very busy, fast-paced, and growing practice, including:
Filing/organization, drafting letters, drafting simple legal pleadings from forms, calendar/scheduling, downloading discovery files and properly organizing them, formatting PDF documents, formatting and mailing motions and other documents that are pre-written, answering telephone calls during business hours, website maintenance and social media (if able), communication with court clerks, clients, and other attorneys (including emails and phone calls), ordering or otherwise purchasing supplies using business funds.
You will have opportunities to grow into other work in time, including: bookmarking PDFs and filing on NYSCEF and the federal CM/ECF system, watching and notating police body worn camera footage, surveillance, and other types of footage.
The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills. Above anything else, we are looking for someone who will be dedicated and take ownership of what we are trying to accomplish. We are laid back on most issues and tolerant of a learning curve, and the main thing we strive to do is to provide every client with better representation than any other attorney would have provided. Since 99% of our work is criminal defense, and we primarily defend serious charges, the assistant must be able to interact with people from all segments of society and must be free of judgment.
Salary/pay is negotiable and depends on the candidate selected. Salary may be quickly increased as well. We are of the philosophy that it is more effective to identify good employees and do what is necessary to keep them happy than to be constantly hiring and training new people.
This is a full-time, business hours position. We offer paid time off, holiday pay, free parking, and bonus potential based upon personal performance and overall firm performance. We also offer a yearly personal development stipend so that you can continue to expand your abilities, which will be of benefit both to you and to the practice.
There is no ideal resume. Anyone from a paralegal with extensive experience to a recent college graduate can be the perfect candidate for this position. It is more about your being committed and taking ownership than the number of years you have been doing similar work.
