The Boat Company (TBC), a family owned, high-end luxury cruise line, seeks a First Mate to join their team of boating professionals for the season March–September of 2022. After orientation in Reedsport, Oregon, boats and crews set out for Sitka and Juneau, Alaska for cruising Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage.

The First Mate is second in command aboard the vessel. Our boats carry 20 to 24 guests with a crew of 14. To be successful in this position, one must be licensed and able to assume full command of the ship in the Captain’s absence. This position supervises, coordinates, and participates in the day-to-day activities of the deck department. TBC is a team that works together to maintain a safe, efficient, and enjoyable workplace. While there are different levels of responsibility onboard, everyone is an equal when work needs to be done.

If you are a hands-on leader, have proven boating management experience, and are an excellent communicator, we want to hear from you.

RESPONSIBILITIES.

  • Under guidance from the Captain, become familiar in handling the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.)
  • Perform navigational watches while underway and safety/anchor/dock watches at other times.
  • Assist Captain with maintenance of required logbooks.
  • Direct/supervise all members of the deck department; hold team members accountable; assist Captain with training and orientation of new crew members.
  • Coordinate line-handling when coming to port, anchoring, skiff-launching and retrieval, deck maintenance and safety.
  • Participate in design/execution of emergency drills; take charge of on-scene response actions; ensure written reports are properly logged.
  • Coordinate/develop with team members daily guest activities and weekly itineraries.
  • Assign guides to guest activities and issue equipment (hand-held radios, fishing tackle, bear protection, etc.); ensure equipment is returned and maintained in good order.
  • Guide guests on a wide variety of off-vessel excursions (sport fishing, hiking, skiff touring, beach combing).
  • Assist in cleaning, filleting, packing, and storing guest catches; ensure guest fish is boxed or bundled, labeled and ready when guests disembark.
  • Supervise daily sport fishing guides; record data in Alaska Dept of Fish & Game sport fish logbooks and related TBC catch records.
  • Prepare pre-season/post-season inventory reports of sport fishing gear, skiff equipment, bosun’s stores. At the end-of-season, thoroughly clean and prepare fishing equipment for storage. Assist Captain in preparing an end-of-season Current Ship Maintenance Project (CSMP) list of items needing attention during the off-season.

COMPENSATION. Starting wage of $5,000 – $6,000 per month in addition to full health insurance, tips (averaging $20,000-$25,000 per person), a $500 bonus for completing the 5½ month season, and travel assistance to Reedsport, Oregon, if needed. Crew members enjoy casual dress (jeans, t-shirts), spacious accommodations, and share a cabin with only 1 team member.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS.

  • Valid driver’s license and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card required.
  • USCG license with a minimum rating of Mate 100-ton required.
  • At least 3 years’ maritime industry experience preferred.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, reference check, and background check.
  • STCW-95 basic safety training certification required.
  • An exceptional ability to engage with others as well as lead, mentor, and encourage a team environment.
  • Sport fish guide experience and familiarity with fly fishing techniques are helpful.
  • Familiarity with Alaska waters, weather conditions, history, and current events helpful.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word; familiarity with Nobeltec TimeZero navigation software a plus.
