OVERVIEW:

The part-time Security First Response Officer works to ensure the security and protection of museum facility, campus, visitors, staff, volunteers and collections for The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, Inc. The officer enforces safety by patrolling the building, Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience (RSLE), and grounds, providing exceptional customer service, hazard/safety checks and parcel inspections, as well as, helping to ensure safe and effective crowd management within the museum building, throughout the RSLE, and parking areas. The incumbent works in the Control Room, provides first aid response, and assists with training other members of the department and museum staff. She/he/they monitors CCTV cameras as well as communicate issues, incidents, and general operations updates to on duty officers.

REPORTS TO: Director of Security Operations

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conducts assigned patrols of the building, RSLE, grounds and parking areas. Responsible for facility security opening duties prior to public hours and securing the building after closing. Conducts and reports on hazard and safety checks to protect against vandalism, misuse, damage, and theft of museum property and assets.

2. Provides first response with first aid, to include CPR, in the treatment of injuries and illness to visitors, staff and volunteers. Supports outside agencies in planning for and during emergencies in provisions of security or medical assistance.

3. While in the Control Room, effectively administers and manages automated security and fire life safety systems, remains well trained on all associated Control Room procedures and operations ensuring proper maintenance and system functionality. Monitors all radio and phone traffic and maintains consistent communication with department colleagues as well as other staff who have been assigned radios. Assigns staff posts and initiates post rotation/bump schedule for on duty staff.

4. Ensure the integrity and functionality of the security systems for the museum facility, campus and remote site locations. Understands, monitors and remains current on automated Control Room systems.

5. Provides exceptional customer service to visitors, museum staff and volunteers. Enforces museum policies and procedures through strong presence and interpersonal communication skills, negotiation and conflict management and assists with reuniting lost children.

6. Provides traffic and parking assistance during high visitation.

7. Provides leadership in emergency protocols for evacuation and relocation and assists visitors and staff in the event of an emergency. Participates in the Safety Warden program and ensures emergency response for all emergency situations and drills. .

8. Operates fire and life safety equipment to include, fire extinguishers, emergency defibrillators, and other first aid equipment.

9. Provides basic vehicular assistance such as jump starts, lock outs and tire changes.

10. Serves a backup for pooled staff coverage when needed. May be asked to complete shift at Visitor Relations posts including job duties and assignments, as Garage Greeter, Security Check-in, Cross Walk, Dock and other posts.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Three (3) years of proven experience in security and first response. CPR, First-Aid, AED certification or proof of attainment within 6 months of employment.

2. EMRS certification or ability to obtain within first year of employment.

3. Law enforcement, firefighting, or Emergency Medical Technician, Security experience preferred.

4. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must be bondable.

5. Must possess excellent communication and customer service and have the ability to interact in a positive manner with large crowds, small children and a diverse audience.

6. Must be able to work weekends and available on holidays and evening shifts.

7. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and work outside in all weather conditions

  • Special consideration given to those applicants who are multi-lingual.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be able to perform extensive work in indoor and outdoor environments, to perceive space, to read documents and diagrams and to view computer monitor.

2. Must be able to communicate through projecting voice and varying tone. Team and group dialog required for communication of plans and concepts.

3. Must be able to sit, stand, squat, and kneel for long periods of time frequently. Must be able to negotiate pedestrian travel throughout the museum physical plant and campus.

4. Must be able to lift objects up to 45 pounds of weight, tolerate dust in the indoor environment and extreme temperatures, and humidity in the outdoor environment.
