Position Summary
The Deputy Fire Chief position is an administrative and supervisory position assisting in planning, organizing, and directing the work of the EMS division. This position has direct command over the emergency medical response system and must exercise considerable judgment in directing personnel and operations at emergency scenes.
Essential Functions
· Administrative supervision of the department in the absence of the Chief;
· Assists with supervision of fire suppression activities, directing fire extinguishment and the protection of human life and property;
· Serves as Service Director for the ambulance service;
· Serves as point of contact for the Kansas Board of EMS;
· Serves as program manager for the department’s long term provider of continuing education through the board of EMS;
· Supervises the development and coordination of EMS activities;
· Assists in the training of firefighters/EMS personnel;
· Prepares reports on monthly activities and other reports as necessary;
· Serves as liaison with the EMS Medical Director and hospital staff;
· Supervises the Infectious Disease Officer(s);
· Performs general public relations work and EMS public education;
· Attends training seminars on fire fighting techniques and new equipment and EMS related subjects;
· Develops procedures and performs quality control activities on EMS activities;
· Acts as HIPAA compliance officer;
· Serves on committees as assigned;
· Develops division budget and controls expenditures;
· Liaison with Lyon County First Responder Groups;
· Attends EMS related meetings as assigned;
· Fosters and maintains excellent working relationships with all departments and allied agencies in Emporia and Lyon County.
· Works with the Fire Chief in purchasing supplies and equipment for the department.
Marginal Functions
· Assists with testing of new employees and recertification;
· Reviews time sheets and tracks vacation and sick leave;
This position may perform other duties as assigned.
Deputy Fire Chief Position Requirements
Experience: A minimum of four years of EMS and firefighting experience in a supervisory position is
required. The employee in this position is expected to have acquired the necessary
information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
Education: Associate degree in related field required.
Certifications: State certification as Fire Officer I and II or equivalent. KBEMS certification as
paramedic required. Requires a current and valid Kansas regular driver’s license.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $75,655.58 - $113,483.37 per year
