What are the responsibilities and job description for the INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICIAN position at The City of Oklahoma City?
NOTE: The normal starting salary for this position is $21.74/hourly. A higher salary may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City’s step placement policy.
NOTE: Selected applicant must be willing to live in a location within thirty (30) minute drive from assigned facility on the pipeline.
A New Hire Signing Bonus of $4,500 is offered for this position.
To be awarded a signing bonus, a successful candidate must be fully qualified (not to include underfills unless otherwise specified) and must sign a City of Oklahoma City New Hire Signing Bonus Agreement prior to the first day of employment.
Signing bonuses will be awarded as a one-time lump sum payment that is paid in a separate check on the first regularly scheduled pay date after an employee’s start date.
Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
This classification is located in various departments throughout the City of Oklahoma City. This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Southeast Water Supply Division of the Utilities Department. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies, including vacancies in other departments, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. Journeyman level skills and knowledge acquired in an industrial setting are necessary prior to assuming the duties of the position. Primary duties include maintaining, troubleshooting, installing and/or repairing electrical equipment, instruments, parts, components and controls in standard and high voltage system environments or facilities. Essential job functions include: inspecting, testing, installing or replacing electrical wiring, lighting, rigid conduit, etc.; cleaning, repairing and replacing dirty or worn parts; and diagnosing and repairing electrical systems and electrical malfunctions. Included in the Industrial Electrician's duties are planning for the most feasible installations, compiling and computing cost estimates, and preparing sketches indicating proposed improvements or changes. The Industrial Electrician may also be required to supervise and direct the work of less skilled workers. Supervision received is of a limited nature and the employee in this classification must assume responsibility for the work performed. Due to direct occupational health, safety and environmental concerns associated with performing both routine and non-routine operations, maintenance, and production tasks, Industrial Electrician is a safety sensitive classification. In these regards, current and prospective employees may be required to meet and maintain specific physical standards and guidelines.

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City shall receive five (5) points added to the passing score on an initial selection process. NOTE: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Flexibility, mobility, and balance enough to bend, twist, and reach out when performing activities such as climbing or working from a ladder to test, replace, or repair electrical connections.
- Arm-hand steadiness, manual dexterity, and finger dexterity enough to safely use manual and power tools to perform tasks such as removing panels, covers, etc. to make equipment repairs.
- Near vision enough to read information media such as blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, code books, equipment labels, etc.
- Visual color discrimination enough to perform duties such as checking the installation of color-coded wires.
- Speech and hearing enough to communicate clearly and distinctly in person and by two-way radio, understand conversation in a noisy environment, and locate malfunctions in machinery.
- Strength enough to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 100 pounds occasionally with assistance.
- Stamina enough to exert oneself physically throughout the workday.
- Mobility enough to continuously move oneself from place to place.
- Gross body coordination and balance enough to perform work while standing on ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, tanks, etc.
- Pulmonary function sufficient to use a self-contained breathing apparatus and cartridge respirator (Utilities Department Only).
- Maximum body mass, including equipment weighing up to 30 pounds not to exceed 310 pounds.
NOTE: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 180 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.
