The Door, founded in 1972, The Door is New York City’s premiere youth development organization, providing comprehensive support to 11,000 vulnerable New Yorkers ages 12 to 24 each year. Our integrated programs – quality health and wellness care, innovative education and career programs, essential legal services, runaway and homeless youth support, and cutting-edge arts opportunities – are under one roof and all for free. In partnership with and co-located at The Door, Broome Street Academy is a unique charter high school that prepares New York City’s most vulnerable youth for a successful future through rigorous academics paired with supports of The Door. Broome Street Academy serves 330 students annually in grades 9 – 12.  

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Director of Training is responsible for delivering the strategic initiatives for the Training department across the agency. This role oversees the internal and external training initiatives of the agency. They will work collaboratively with program leaders to provide training and support for Door staff and to ensure the provision of relevant and responsive learning opportunities. In an agency-wide role, they will ensure that incoming and current staff have a comprehensive understanding of The Door’s philosophy and policies, have regular access to new, relevant learning opportunities, and are able to work with young people to maximize service provision. 

This is an in-person position with the possibility to work remotely 1 day a week.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee agency training operations and events
  • Work closely with Chief of Staff in developing and driving training initiatives and projects
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team and Managers in development and implementation of trainings
  • Work with outside resources in the fulfillment of training needs including evaluating pro-bono training opportunities and figuring out how to implement them across the agency
  • Plan events relating to training and wellness initiatives, conference participation, and other related activities
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources department and the Manager of Race Equity and Inclusion on implementation and maintenance of HR and REI trainings including, but not limited to, the New Employee Orientation
  • Create and manage the training database, ensuring data integrity and accurate record-keeping
  • Develop internal training program and curriculum centering on continued staff knowledge, growth, and development
  • Work closely with staff trainers to ensure that they are equipped, prepared, and ready to conduct staff trainings; assist them with the production of training contents and materials as needed
  • Build a practice of self-care and community care at The Door, including organizing community building events
  • Administrative management of internship programs
  • Assist with agency-wide activities
  • Work closely with the Executive Team and Senior Leadership on agency operations and special projects as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned by Chief of Staff 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or at least 7 years of experience working in a social service agency, or an equivalent combination 
  • At least 3 years of administrative experience leading or facilitating training
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, race equity and inclusion, youth development, and the missions of our agency
  • Proven project management ability
  • Ability to develop trusting relationships with young people, staff, and management equally
  • Strong analytical, administrative, written, and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse team
  • Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • Willingness to take on additional responsibilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, 35 hours a week
