What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part Time Technical Coach, Product Design position at The Flatiron School?
Flatiron School is seeking a Part Time Product Design Technical Coach to join our team. This role will be tied to one of the two modalities (Flex or Live) of the Product Design program offering. The Product Design Technical Coach loves teaching and will inspire with passion, expertise, positivity, and humor. Candidates help teach students hard skills (design tools) and soft skills (time management), as well as how to maintain a growth mindset for their future. The ideal candidate for this position has solid design and communication skills, can self-organize, and can guide a large group of students with empathy, ensuring their time at Flatiron School is a thorough and pleasant experience. This role is a Part Time role, requiring individuals to teach Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12pm-6pm EST.
Responsibilities:
Product Design Technical Coaches are entry-level designers (0-4 years experience) who show exemplary design, teaching, and leadership skills. Their primary duties are to support cohorts across each phase of the program in multiple ways:
To support delivery, Technical Coaches may be asked to:
- Help facilitate daily/weekly workshops
- Provide educational resources
- Offer advice to students in their cohort
- Facilitate review sessions to provide a timely critique
- Conduct daily huddles/stand-ups or weekly 1:1s
- Check in with students throughout the day/week to provide feedback and troubleshoot project blockers
- Help guide students to manage their time better
- Ensure final deliverables are complete and follow the rubric
- Help develop student design portfolios
- Engage with the design community on Discord or Zoom
Technical Coaches examine the whole student experience throughout the program and provide recommendations and actionable plans to the Faculty Manager for continuous improvement.

- Advocate for student needs and overall wellness
- Elevate the successes and celebrate student progress
- Escalating student concerns to the Lead Instructor, Student Adviser, and/or Faculty Manager
The breakdown of roles for the Technical Coaches will differ and shift depending on the needs of the phase, cohort, and responsibilities set by the Faculty Manager. Because each cohort is made of a unique set of students that has different needs and goals, Technical Coaches must be ready to tailor their approach and activities and adapt to each new cohort—this provides opportunities for innovation within the role and growth as a professional.
Qualifications:
- 0- 4 years experience in a product design-related field or program
- Some basic HTML/CSS knowledge is a plus
- Software knowledge of Figma plus some knowledge of web builder tools such as UXFolio
- A proven ability to use or quickly learn to use LMS (Learning Management Systems) software, such as Canvas or Learn
- You can operate a large team independently
- You take a data-driven approach to business decisions
