The Guardian US is looking for an Editorial Visuals Designer to join our New York newsroom.
This is a nine-month fixed-term position to bolster our visuals team during the election year.
You’ll help elevate our day to day coverage by creating distinctive identities for recurring areas of reporting, and give extra attention to our highest priority stories and special series.
The designer will join a team that already includes photo editors, art directors, and graphics reporters, and help design in-house illustrations, lay out stories, create treated photos, composites, and simple graphics.

Normal location: New York, NY
Terms: Nine month fixed term contract, full time, News Media Guild position.
Salary range: $100,000-$140,000 (annual rate/equivalent)
The Job
- Design header images and reusable image treatments for recurring columns.
- Create one-off visual approaches for special projects and series, including bespoke story design (typographic and color treatments) and art direction.
- Create simple explanatory graphics, diagrams, and annotated photos
- Design occasional static assets such as section banners and newsletter headers.
- Lay out visual stories in our CMS using existing tools and templates
- Occasionally work with the audience team to assist the translation of these visuals to off-platform formats, including newsletters and social media
The Candidate
- 1-3 years design experience. Newsroom experience is a plus, but we are excited to hear from anyone with a design background and a strong portfolio.
- Distinct visual ideas, with a point of view
- Willing to explore offbeat or unexpected visual approaches to journalism
- Excellent typography
- Able to work quickly and accurately on multiple projects at speed and under pressure
- Enthusiasm for good journalism and visual storytelling
- An eye for detail and nuance
- Robust experience with Photoshop and Illustrator
In addition to these core responsibilities, we’d be interested in a demonstrated experience in any one of the following areas, which could make up a small part of the role:
- Front end web development
- AI2HTML
- Simple animations
- Simple infographics
