As part of a two-year Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant, we have a part-time Associate Curator opportunity. In this role, you will participate in the research and interpretation of targeted collections artifacts related to agriculture and the environment. This cross-functional position reports directly to the Project Curator and has a close working relationship with the collection management, conservation, registrar, archive and library staff as well as the photography team and digital collections and content manager; ensuring both the historical integrity of information related to the targeted collections and the efficient integration of selected items into the existing digitization pipeline.


Essential responsibilities

  • Working with and under the Project Curator, selects items from among those targeted by the grant.
  • Practices a high standard of public history using the best scholarship to tease out stories from these items, using material culture and archival evidence as well as supplementary primary and secondary sources.
  • Synthesizes research into user-friendly digital content for the diverse audiences served by The Henry Ford, to include object narratives, blog posts, expert sets, and other content formats for The Henry Ford’s website or elsewhere as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains a broad understanding of the significant American objects, stories, and lives that are relevant to grant objectives and to the mission, strategic initiatives, and brand voice of The Henry Ford.
  • Develops and maintains a broad understanding of The Henry Ford’s collections.
  • Collaborates effectively in teams and contributes to the effective team management of all problems, issues, and opportunities.
  • Acts as a team player and provides expertise within teams as appropriate.


Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in American history, American Studies, material culture, information studies, museum studies, or a related field
  • Advanced knowledge of searching capability on museum collection databases
  • General understanding of standard cataloging theories and practice
  • Familiarity with key digital content concepts such as content strategy, SEO strategy, social media, and analytics
  • Adept with technology, including the Microsoft Office suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with historical artifacts
  • Digital content creation experience

Special Skills

  • Ability to research and interpret American social and cultural history through material culture; experience in interpreting museum collections.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail; excellent research, writing, editing, coordination, and verbal communications skills
  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to multi-task and respond to work requests with short notice

Additional Information

  • Work environments include collections storage; occasional exposure to chemicals, dust, and mold
  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, carrying, pushing, pulling and occasional lifting up to 40 lbs.
