Role Summary:
The Blue Sky Farmer will work alongside the farm team in day-to-day operations on Saving Gracie’s intensive and diverse vegetable farm. The farm will supply fruits, vegetables and flowers to the Blue Sky Ranch and Lodge restaurants, events, and catering services. The farm will also be a space in which guests of the lodge will share adventures and experiences which will enhance their luxury experience.
Responsibilities consist of participation in the farm’s daily activities. These activities include but are not limited to: maintaining the greenhouse and hoophouse, preparing the ground, irrigation install and maintenance, seeding and transplanting, weeding, harvesting, processing, and packaging. The position will also include being a steward and representative of Gracie’s Farm for Lodge guests and visitors during programmed experiences. This is a seasonal position spanning from April through October. 15-20 hrs per week on the farm and can be combined with other positions around the ranch.
The position will involve a commitment and love for working outdoors, learning the science and skill set of farming, and the ability to work in a variety of settings and positions within the farm.
Core Responsibilities:
Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of everything that needs to be done! Within the Blue Sky family, our people always find new ways to look after the business, their guests, and their team-mates. The Foundation Assistant reports directly to the Farm Director and is an integral part of the guest experience and animal care. Some holidays and weekend days will be REQUIRED for this job. Duties/responsibilities include:
Support field operations, including soil and bed prep,, planting, cultivation, harvest and processing
Help maintain greenhouse and hoophouse operations – watering, cleaning, material storage
Ensure irrigation plan is executed and consistent on a scheduled and routine basis
Maintain the landscape and ground of the farm to be an inviting and beautiful space
Be involved in the use of livestock and animals in the process of enriching the soil
Participate in the processing procedure in the barn
Help with maintenance of tools and materials
Set up and support of farm stand or CSA pickup
Be available and participate in guest experiences
Provide support to other staff with regard to the farm property
Participate in the set up and execution of farm activities
Other duties as assigned around the ranch or farm
Required Qualifications:Strong work-ethic
Adaptability to changing situations with the ability to perform multiple tasks, with multiple priorities
Positive, observant, quick learner, interest in expanding skill and knowledge
Able to work fast and efficiently, on a variety of tasks
Interested in growing organically/sustainably and enthusiastic about local food movement
Excellent communication skills for work with operational personnel on the farm
Motivated to work independently and also able to take directions and be a team member
Adherence to high aesthetic standards in all areas
Maintain a professional and outstanding customer service attitude
Ability to use vegetable hand tools and power equipment safely and efficiently
Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Able to perform physically strenuous task and be able to lift up to 50lbs
