The Midnight Mission is the oldest continuously operating human service organization in the Los Angeles region. Centered in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles, The Midnight runs one of the most efficient direct service operations in the country. With only five executive managers throughout its 100 year history, The Midnight has been a consistent beacon of light for those with nowhere else to turn.
We are currently seeking a Human Resource Generalist, who, at the direction of the Human Resources Director, assumes responsibility for managing all HR-related activities, and coordinates with other departments for delivering all HR-related services and daily operation of the Human Resources Department.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Be an invaluable partner to the Director of HR
- Update and maintain accurate data in ADP WorkforceNow
- Implement and administer employee policies
- Provide high-quality advice and service to employees on daily employee relations and performance management issues
- Support the HR department in implementing programs to help improve the employee experience
- Identify ways to improve policies and procedures
- Prepare termination and severance letters and checks
- Train and provide support to team members
- Manage new hire paperwork to completion.
- Audit personnel files for accuracy and completeness.
- Manage COBRA coverage, including enrollment, verification of qualification, and processing of payments.
- Process, audit, respond, and file all documentation for the department.
- Review, process and categorize all incoming departmental mail.
- Assist with coordination of all TMM employee activities, including coordination of TMM Workshops, Employee Newsletter, and Employee Recognition activities
- Participate in developing organizational guidelines and procedures.
- Recommend strategies to motivate employees.
- Full-cycle recruitment: identifying candidates, conducting reference checks and issuing employment documents.
- Investigate complaints brought forward by employees.
- Coordinate employee development plans and performance management.
- Perform orientations and update records of new staff.
- Assist with budget monitoring and payroll.
- Keep up-to-date with the latest HR trends and best practice.
- Maintains and orders equipment and supplies as needed.
- Perform related duties and participate on projects as needed.
- Recruits, interviews, tests and assist in selecting new hires to fill positions as needed
- Coordinates the processing of payroll and accuracy of employee data
- Keeps records of benefits plan participation such as health insurance, personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, terminations and employee statistics for government reporting
- Coordinates management training in interviewing, hiring, terminations, promotions, performance reviews, safety, and sexual harassment
- Administers benefits such as health, dental and disability insurances, vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, 403b, and employee assistance
- Investigates accidents and prepares reports for the insurance carrier
- Prepares employee separation notices and related documentation. Conducts interviews to determine reasons behind separations
- Prepares reports and recommends procedures to tardiness, absenteeism, and turnover
- Provides advice and expertise to all associates and managers regarding HR policies, employment programs, practices, and processes
- Responsible for HR data management and analysis. Maintains HRIS data and ensure data integrity
- Effectively delivers company programs, policies, and procedures
- Resolves employee relations issues as they occur, interfacing with various levels of management
- Promotes a positive employee environment through the application of fair, consistent and equitable human resources practices
- Maintains and updates associate files with proper documentation
- Provides direction to management and employees on addressing and improving performance concerns through coaching, counseling, career development, and disciplinary actions
- Maintains compliance with federal, state and local regulations while adhering to corporate policies, procedures, and practices pertaining to employment matters
- Partners with associates and management to communicate various HR policies, procedures, laws, standards, and government regulations
- Conducts timely, effective, thorough and objective investigations to resolve moderate to complex employee relations/labor issues
- Represents the company for unemployment claims
- Create and process reports as needed
Education
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience required
Experience
- 4 years experience in human resources
- Management experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Exemplary ADP WorkforceNow knowledge and experience
- Must demonstrate strong analytical, communication and exceptional problem-solving skills thereby making swift decisions to close issues quickly
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with the aptitude to prioritize multiple projects
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Ability to coach associates and guide management through complex issues and make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues
- Exceptional organizational citizenship
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
