The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) a congressionally funded, private, nonprofit grant making organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks an Assistant Program Officer for the Global program.  This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Program Officer will assist with the management, administration, and development of the Endowment’s Global grants portfolio, including the monitoring and assessment of projects.

Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely and flexibly with a diverse range of democracy actors across the world.
  • Assist in reviewing project proposals.
  • Produce written materials to present proposals to NED leadership.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of NED-approved projects by analyzing grantee reports, providing feedback on implemented activities, and maintaining continuous communication over the grant cycle.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Track political developments around the world.
  • Think creatively about how to improve team effectiveness, grantee-reporting guidelines, communications with other teams at NED, etc.
  • Liaise with other NED teams; participate in various working groups, and other efforts to improve NED’s overall functioning and effectiveness.
  • Provide general programmatic support for senior staff in fulfillment of the NED’s mission.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs, Political Science, International Development, History or a related discipline is required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 2 years of experience in democracy-related programs.

 

  • Other Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of crosscutting political developments and trends as they relate to democracy and human rights.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required; fluency in at least one foreign language is desirable.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

 

  • Competencies:
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • High degree of organization and initiative.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team.

This position is part of the NED Bargaining Unit.
