Job Title: Assistant Manager - Organic/Conventional Agronomy Research Department: FAES | Research Operations Reporting to Assistant Superintendent for Research Farms, the assistant manager assists in management of field operations to implement, maintain and meet research objectives for organic and conventional agronomic crops at CFAES Wooster Campus. Collaborates with research and extension faculty, staff and students to establish and maintain experiments and crop rotations for organic crops, and experiments on long term tillage, crop and soil fertility, ag. engineering and other specified projects. Assists in prioritizing and assigning field space for field experiments. Assists in establishing crop rotations to maintain soil quality. Plans daily work schedules and follows protocols to successfully accomplish research objectives. Directs and participates in operations to establish experiments including plot layout, tillage, fertilizers & soil amendments, pest control, planting, mechanical weed control, other cultural practices, harvesting and recording of yield data. Assists with composting operations and managing soil amendment application. Monitors/scouts crops for conditions that may impact research results and reports observations and takes appropriate actions. Assists other campus farm units as required, shares equipment and staff resources when needed to meet peak workload demands. Assists in hiring, training and supervising staff and students; Performs business functions, enters purchase requests and submits invoices for payment and assists with procurement of supplies. Assists with coordinating farm equipment repairs and facility maintenance, including specialized field research equipment and precision agriculture systems. Assists with monitoring budget resources and time/effort records. Assists with marketing crops per department and university procedures. Assists management team to ensure the unit's safe work environment at all times, including equipment operation and pesticide use. Maintains detailed records of crop history and operations for organic certification and summarizes reports for annual audit and reporting to investigators. Communicates progress of operations to faculty/staff/students. Schedules experimental treatment applications, performs agricultural operations, collects data and samples per project protocols. Makes recommendations to supervisor regarding equipment, facilities, labor and policy development. May assist with supporting research operations at off-site locations as directed by supervisor. Provides support for planning of field days and outreach events. Attends continuing education programs and team meetings. Assists with training graduate and undergraduate students on field research procedures. Works flexible schedule as required by weather, soil, pest and crop conditions. Education: Bachelors Agronomy or equivalent experience Additional Information: 40% Assists in management of field operations to implement, maintain and meet research objectives for organic and conventional agronomic crops at CFAES Wooster Campus.
