PRINCIPIA COLLEGE Position Description

Elsah, Illinois

Title: Director of Campus Security (College Campus)

Department/Location: Elsah Campus Security

Organizational Relationships: Reports to Chief Operations Officer. Directly supervises Campus Security Supervisor(s), Senior Security Officers, Security Officers, and Office Manager.

Summary: Directs the Campus Security team, and oversees all policies, procedures, and operations related to the safety and security of the College campus, in support of The Principia Purpose and Policies.

  • Work Performed - Essential Duties:
  • Oversees all department activities including, budget management; hiring and staff scheduling, supervision, evaluations, and payroll; campus and building access control and security; key and key card access control system management; campus crime investigation and reporting; high security item storage; safety and security awareness, fire alarm monitoring, response and documentation; emergency planning, preparedness and response; event security and parking planning and coordination; registration of cars and bicycles; parking and traffic regulations monitoring and enforcement; and approved Principia vehicle driver program
  • Metaphysically supports the department and the community on a daily basis
  • Ensures the professional development and security training of all campus security team staff including CPR/AED and first aid; Notifier System and Outdoor Emergency Notification System; School Messenger; Andover systems for emergency alerts; appropriate online FEMA courses, and training with local law enforcement, including active shooter/hostile intruder
  • Consults and coordinates with local law enforcement agencies in support of effective campus security and safety; maintains relationship with local and State law enforcement, including on-campus policing services contract with Village of Elsah; member of Jersey County Emergency Management Team
  • Provides on the ground support to Elsah Campus Incident Command System (ICS), consistent with Principia’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP), during designated critical emergencies
  • Reviews and establishes safety and security operational standards, policies and procedures consistent with legal requirements and higher education best practices for students, staff, visitors, buildings and grounds
  • Maintains controlled vehicle access via a manned Gate House 24/7/365
  • Collaborates effectively with students, staff, and faculty, and other departments, including the Office of the College President, Student Life, Facilities, Athletics, Christian Science Nursing, and other various directors and administrators to support a secure campus environment
  • Coordinates with Principia College Facilities on fire/smoke detection and response, fire extinguishers, fire safety inspections, and emergency communications radio network
  • Maintains relationship with QEM Fire Protection District
  • Meets regularly with Chief Operations Officer, Dean of Students, Assistant Athletic Director, and Facilities Director
  • Assists emergency response effort as an on-call responder as needed for Cox Cottage activities, fires, tornado, auto accidents, etc.

Additional Duties:

  • Covers the Gatehouse when staffing limits require this, for all shifts and each day of the week.
  • Shares responsibility for office coverage, telephone and walk-in traffic
  • Educates – sees all activities as an educational opportunity

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Active (or pending) membership in the First Church of Christ, Scientist and/or in a Journal-listed branch church or society of the First Church of Christ, Scientist
  • Christian Science class instruction preferred, but not required
  • Employee management experience with strong team-building skills
  • Safety and security experience
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle confrontations in a professional and healing manner
  • Working knowledge of computers and computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and willingness and ability to learn Principia-specific database programs
  • Ability to articulate ideas in written and verbal communications
