The Office of Environmental Health and Safety seeks applicants for the position of Industrial Hygienist. This position will support departmental efforts to promote the safe and compliant conduct of research, education, and patient care services across the UVA community. The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for completing projects and tasks in the University’s asbestos and lead management program and other occupational health programs. This position requires occasional work after normal business hours and on weekends. Responsibilities: Air quality and workplace exposure sampling in a variety of work environments, for example: Asbestos abatement projects, research laboratories, shops, clinics, offices, and athletic facilities. Collecting bulk asbestos and lead samples. Inspecting asbestos abatement projects as Abatement Project Monitor. Analyzing asbestos air samples using Phase Contrast Microscopy. Completing asbestos inspection reports, air sampling and workplace exposure assessment reports. Assisting with building inspections and special hazardous building materials projects as needed. Performing occupational exposure monitoring including but not limited to noise, air quality and workplace air contaminants. Administering the air and noise sampling equipment maintenance program including calibration and repair, as needed. Respirator fit testing as Respiratory Protection Program Administrator. Recordkeeping associated with the asbestos, respirator, and hearing conservation programs. Share in the EHS responsibility to respond to after-hours emergencies. Employee may be on-call during specified periods and will respond as necessary. Minimum Requirements: Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree, four years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Preferred Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a science, engineering, or construction. (i.e., physical science, biological and health sciences, occupational health and safety, chemical or mechanical engineering, construction management/technology or environmental science). High school diploma plus four years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Familiar with applicable safety and health regulations (e.g., Virginia Department of Occupational Safety & Health), professional health & safety consensus guidelines, and University policies. Required License: Valid, un-restricted Virginia Driver's License, or the ability to obtain an un-restricted Virginia Driver's License within 90 days of hire. Required Immunization: Employees will be required to comply with the Health System’s immunization policy – OCH-002: Occupational Health Screening and Maintenance. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Possess confidence in communication including effective verbal and written skills. Bring demonstrated ability and experience in listening, communicating, and relating professionally with all members of a university community and with project contractors. Ability to complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE) as may be required. Ability to routinely work after normal business hours and weekends to align with scheduled construction activities. Ability to perform accurate field measurements, data calculations, results interpretation and transcribe values into a database. Demonstrate a level of mechanical aptitude and keen observation. Able to balance multiple projects at a time, be highly reliable, flexible, and service oriented. Be motivated to take initiative in accomplishing work responsibilities both independently and as a collaborative, professional and respectful EHS team member. Preferred Computer Applications: Competent in Microsoft Office Suite applications, utilizing spreadsheets and databases for data tracking and analysis, and experience with online research for the identification of technical resources. Preferred Experience: 1-2 years of relevant work experience in the sciences or engineering. e.g., in a laboratory, in health sciences, in industry or another technical field. Current certification as a Virginia Asbestos Project Monitor, Asbestos Project Designer and Asbestos Inspector. Additional training in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, or other applicable technical fields. Prior experience in workplace and/or asbestos sampling. Experience in a laboratory research environment with hazardous materials. College level coursework in Chemistry. Preferred Licensure: Virginia Asbestos Project Monitor license. Physical Requirements: This position involves active and sedentary tasks. Active tasks during fieldwork include frequent standing, bending, crouching, reaching, occasional ladder climbing, moderate lifting, carrying and manipulating survey equipment and walking for extended periods as a part of inspections and consultations. Must be able to wear a tight-fitting respirator as required. Working Environment: This position requires entering construction sites, confined spaces (e.g., tunnels or crawl spaces), asbestos regulated areas, research laboratories, offices, outdoor facilities, vivaria, medical center locations including the Emergency Department, operating rooms, morgue, pathology and gross anatomy labs and other areas where hazardous materials, loud noise, non-ionizing energy fields and potentially harmful equipment exists. Anticipated hiring salary: $20.67 - $25.96 per hour/ $43,000.00 - $54,000.00 annually; commensurate of education and experience APPLICATION PROCESS: Please apply through Workday, and search for R0040158.
