The Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine, seeks candidates for a Lab Specialist Intermediate to provide scientific and technical support for laboratory-based research pertaining to molecular genetics with a heavy emphasis on CRISPR-mediated gene editing. The Lab Specialist will work within the research lab of Dr. Eric A. Hendrickson, PhD under the direction of Brian Ruis, MS to generate genome edited cell lines for University of Virginia researchers. The successful candidate will be expected to: Perform and assist with experiments involving mammalian cell culture, DNA isolation, and PCR. Work with the senior scientists to develop methodologies and protocols for ongoing lab projects. Assist with the collection and entry of data in electronic media. Order lab supplies. Perform routine laboratory maintenance. Perform routine laboratory data analysis and procedures. Independently prepare solutions and reagents. Ultimately, be responsible for their own research project. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. Qualified candidates must have: Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree. Experience in molecular biology or other directly related scientific field is preferred. Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to resolve problems and work accurately and with attention to detail. Ability to analyze and organize work procedures; plan and execute tasks or experiments; and interpret and report findings. Ability to conduct laboratory experiments with limited supervision. Ability to collect and handle data or samples. Ability to understand laboratory process and procedures. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). The Lab Specialist Intermediate will report to Brian Ruis, Lab Manager. Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. This position will remain open until filled. This is an exempt level, benefited position.
