Job Posting for Director of Fundraising at The Salvation Army Western USA

About the Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love for God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Positions Summary

The Salvation Army is embarking on an ambitious initiative called “The Way Out” to build 1000 beds for San Francisco’s homeless population to significantly reduce the city’s street homelessness and substance abuse crisis.

Its groundbreaking, first-in-the-city program combines longer-term housing with workforce training and wraparound social supports to help homeless clients who suffer from substance abuse disorder to gain control over their futures, achieve economic independence, and permanently move off the streets.

“The Way Out” initiative has made significant progress, including completing a master plan to redevelop 6 Army-owned properties; starting a demonstration pilot to validate the program’s model with client-based results and acquiring an additional facility to start a catering program in an expanded phase 2 of the pilot.

That’s where you come in: we’re looking for an ambitious, passionate, results-oriented Director of Fundraising to lead a $100M capital campaign—one of the largest ever in San Francisco—to help us move the needle on the most pressing challenge facing our San Francisco community.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Divisional Director of Development, you will:

  • Develop and lead the strategy and implementation for The Way Out Capital Campaign, including prospecting, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major donors and corporate donors
  • Pioneer new community and fundraising events that expose the Army to new donor audiences and increase their giving
  • Engage with major industries in the Bay Area, specifically technology companies and startups, to develop partnerships and gifts that benefit The Way Out
  • Engage with local government, to drive communication and potential partnerships for The Way Out
  • Work with our PR and Social Media team to make The Way Out’s successes a compelling and consistent influence for the homelessness conversation in San Francisco
  • Help build out the San Francisco Advisory Board’s membership to increase its capacity to fundraise for The Way Out
  • Measure and report on progress against your plans, with a focus on scaling what’s working and iterating on what’s not

Qualifications

Experiences that make you stand out:

  • 10 years of experience in a nonprofit fundraising role where you successfully secured large private contributions
    • Experience securing government contracts and partnerships is a plus!
  • Tenure personally managing or leading a capital campaign where you raised six and seven figure gifts on a 3–5-year timeline
  • Deep understanding of major development strategies, including major donors, corporate donors, planned giving, events, and public grants
  • A record of accomplishments in large complex organizations with multiple stakeholders and multi-step processes
  • Extensive knowledge of the Bay Area’s philanthropic landscape and community
    • A well-established public profile is a plus!

Skills that make you extraordinary:

  • You can transform a vision into strategy: You have an innate understanding of how to break down a high- level goal into component pieces and prioritize them based on impact and effort
  • You’re an operator at heart: You love executing on ideas, care deeply about results, and can flex based on changing dynamics
  • You are an extraordinary written and verbal communicator, with several examples of how your words have changed a prospective donor’s mind
  • You love talking to people: you spike on EQ, prefer to spend all your time convincing donors about your organization’s mission, and comfortable even with discerning VIPs
  • You’re highly organized: you have deep knowledge of how to use CRMs, email automation software, and analytical tools to manage campaigns and initiatives to high-conversion results
