POSITION TITLE: DISTRICT STORE MANAGER
STATUS: EXEMPT FULL-TIME
SUPERVISOR: RETAIL OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

The Salvation Army is a branch of the Christian Church and the ultimate goal of all programs is spiritual regeneration of all people.

In addition to Store Management responsibilities at their base store, the District Store Manager will travel to stores within their designated geographic area to make sure the other Store Managers are running their stores properly. The District Store Manager will stay in regular contact with store managers to address management questions, solve high-level problems and to relay important company information.

The District Store Manager is also responsible for implementing company-wide initiatives involving product merchandising, pricing strategies, promotions, and retail branding. They enforce policies and training programs for store managers to follow and implement with their own teams.

The expanded district-wide responsibilities mentioned above are in addition to those of the core role of Store Manager at their base store, which include overseeing the general operations of the thrift store and supervising the thrift store and donation center staff. Staff tasks include processing donations, sorting, pricing, tagging, and merchandising, operating the cash register and other responsibilities as assigned. The Store Manager is responsible for bank deposits and reporting as required by The Salvation Army. In addition, they will:

  • Communicate and enforce guidelines to prepare merchandise for sale by pricing and tagging items and clothes.
  • Create an attractive shopping environment including neatly stacking, shelving, and hanging clothing garments and other donated goods.
  • Enforce pricing policies and recommended strategies for sales promotions to maximize sales.
  • Enforce the Division-approved system for purging items from the store to ensure a constant flow of new inventory.
  • Ensure the thrift store is always organized and clean, which includes sweeping, mopping, dusting, etc.
  • Assist in the recruitment of employees and volunteers and handling appropriate paperwork.
  • Assist in the training and development of staff and volunteers.
  • Responsible for scheduling of store and donation center employees to ensure each day is staffed appropriately.
  • Approve vacation requests and conduct annual performance reviews for store and donation center employees.
  • When appropriate and authorized, utilize the internet and social media to advertise the store and promote the most valuable and highest demand items.
  • Keep record of daily sales and monthly totals and report these figures to DHQ.
  • Understand and comply with federal and state laws regarding the sale of used items.

Job Requirements:

  • HS diploma or GED equivalent. College degree in Business, Sales, Marketing, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Prior successful work experience in a retail setting a plus.
  • Ability to handle a cash register and teach others how to handle one, including voiding, discounts, etc.
  • Excellent math/accounting skills and familiarity working with cash receipts.
  • Must keep information in a confidential and secure manner.
  • Must be self-motivated and can work in a constantly changing environment.
  • Must be able to adhere to project and work deadlines.
  • Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks:
    • PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check.
    • Must have an understanding and appreciation of the Mission of The Salvation Army.
