THE OPPORTUNITY
The Salvation Army is seeking a highly motivated fundraising professional with a capacity for strategic thinking to become their next Development Director. Based in Chatanooga, the Director will manage a 3-person team, in their goal of implementing a well-defined development plan with the freedom to make development decisions based on the intricates of the Chatanooga community. The Director must be passionate about the mission of the Salvation Army and driven to impact those most in need in our community. With the support of an international organization, an established history in the Chatanooga market, and an engaged Advisory Board, the Development Director will be asked to raise roughly $2M through donor communication and cultivation and major gifts generated from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Development Director will strategically plan, implement, and oversee the Community Relations and Development team and function.
CANDIDATE PROFILE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Development Director will be responsible for personal donor fundraising, managing the grant program, long-term development and planning, leadership of the team, and daily administration.
Personal Donor Fund-Raising
- Aggressively develops and nurtures a Donor Portfolio of 100-125 donors and prospective donors including individuals, foundations, and corporations.
- Assists in designing an integrated development program with the input and execution of the Communications Director and other related staff.
- Responds to inquiries and communications from donors from all stakeholders in a timely, professional, and appropriate manner.
- Works to raise monies and meet the prescribed goals as determined and approved by the Area Commander.
- Creates and implements a plan to acquire new donor leads. This may include individuals, churches, foundations, and organizations.
- Manages the use of Interchange, inputs donor information into Interchange regularly
- Provides upward leadership to Area Commanders in assisting with their donor portfolios.
Managing Grant Program
- Researches, develops, writes, submits and helps administer grants from local foundations and corporations, as well as those from local, state, and federal government agencies.
- Creates, writes, and produces ongoing communication updates with local foundations and funding sources, as well as for submission to Divisional Headquarters.
- Prepares and maintains foundation and corporation information databases.
- Assists Chattanooga Salvation Army ministries including Departments and Corps in locating and applying for grants; assists in preparing new program proposals and applying for Salvation Army grant funds.
- Establish an internal process that provides quantitative and qualitative measurements for gift officers progress and tracks grant application and report deadlines.
Long-Term Development & Planning
- Directs strategic planning and implementation relative to the Salvation Army’s development efforts.
- Works with key staff to execute yearly fundraising development/ communications plan that includes clear short term and long-range goals with a particular focus on growing our base of financial supporters.
- Establishes a contact and visitation plan for prospects and financial supporters to establish, build, and maintain relationships.
- Works to implement and successfully complete the Development Dashboard (strategic plan) as prescribed by the Area Commander, focusing on Donor Care; Field Care; Team Care; Professional Growth; and Production.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage the three-person development team ensuring team achieves both individual and team goals.
- Works closely with the Area Commander to determine local funding needs and program and services offered for presentation to donors and prospective donors.
- Oversees the work/efforts of external communications entity.
- Works closely and meets regularly with the Advisory Organizations (Boards, Councils, Committees and Women’s Auxiliary, to ascertain potential and current funding sources; community and business leaders and influencers, and faith-based opportunities.
- Serve as member of the Area Command’s Leadership team providing cross functional input into all major areas of the ministry to ensure organizational success.
Daily Administration & Management
- Represents The Salvation Army professionally and appropriately in a variety of settings and events.
- Attends and participates in the annual Territorial Development Conference.
- Works to ensure that all presentations, proposals, applications and both oral and written communications meet the language standards expected and are in compliance with Salvation Army policies and procedures, and are in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Submits annual Revenue and Budget projections. Manages the approved budget.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent business experience
- 3 – 5 years as a non-profit fundraiser, including specific experience in grant management.
- Experience in implementing large-scaled fundraising campaigns
- Knowledge of current principles and practices of individual, corporate and foundation fund-raising, and communication techniques.
- Knowledge of donor records management and administration as well as data and trend analysis.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with the development team at the local, divisional, and territorial levels of the organization.
- Ability to motivate, manage, mentor, and celebrate every one of the team to their fullest capacity.
- Ability to build and maintain effective donor relationships.
- Ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records in Interchange.
- Ability to interpret Salvation Army policies and local, state, and federal laws as they relate to fund raising.
- Ability to maintain the security and accountability of donated assets.Additional

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The Salvation Army is prepared to offer a competitive salary in the range of $75,000 – $85,000 commensurate with experience with a full range of benefits.
