What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher position at {The Salvation Army}?

Responsible for the education and general development of the children in the Head Start classroom.

 

Responsible for contributing to the development of the overall agency and center educational plans and for the classroom implementation of the center plan that is geared to meet the needs of each individual child enrolled in the program in accordance with the Head Start day care program.

STATUS TYPE:            Full-Time

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Safety
    1. Demonstrates safety practices.

    2. Plans and implements activities that promote personal health.
    3. Plans and implements activities that promote sound nutrition.

    1. Maintains learning environment.
    2. Plans and implements activities that promote an interest in the learning environment offering a choice of learning center activities for at least sixty minutes each day.
  4. Physical
    1. Plans and implements activities that promote the physical development of each child.
    2. Maintains an environment conducive to development of physical skills.
  5. Cognitive
    1. Plans and implements activities that promote questioning, probing exploration and problem solving.
    2. Helps children develop conceptual framework for interpreting experiences, including:
      1. Classification
      2. Seriation
      3. Number
      4. Spatial relations
      5. Representation
      6. Time
  6. Communication
    1. Promotes children’s listening skills.
    2. Promotes clear articulation and language production.
    3. Promotes adult-child communication.
    4. Promotes child-child communication.
  7. Creative
    1. Supplies equipment and materials that encourage creativity.
    2. Encourages innovative uses of materials and divergent thinking.
  8. Self
    1. Assesses each child’s current skill level.
      1. Writes observation notes weekly on C.A.R.
      2. Summarizes child’s skills two times per year on C.O.R.
    2. Plans and implements activities which maximize opportunities for success.
    3. Provides positive feedback to children when appropriate.
  9. Social
    1. Plans and implements activities that develop awareness of feelings and emotions.
    2. Capitalizes on spontaneous occurrences of empathy, display of feelings and emotions throughout the day.
    3. Serves as role model.
  10. Guidance
    1. Maintains an environment conducive to preventive discipline.
    2. Maintains consistent discipline in the classroom.
    3. Sets and enforces appropriate limits.
    4. Maintains a positive approach to classroom control, and recognizes self-control as a learning process.
    5. Organizes smooth and appropriate transitions.
    6. Focuses on activity at hand rather than children’s behavior.
    7. Ignores inappropriate behavior when possible.
    8. “Lets’ go” of negative instances: does not harbor grudges.
    9. Encourages children to make appropriate choices in controlling their own behavior.
    10. Avoids excessive lining up.
  11. Families
    1. Involves parents in the classroom program.
    2. Involves parents in extending the classroom program into the home.
      1. Shares information on child’s progress with parents.
      2. Helps parents plan in-home activities to supplement the classroom program.
      3. Makes home visits in September/October and April/May.
      4. Serves as liaison between other components and parents.
  12. Program Management
    1. Employs a wide variety of resources in implementing curriculum.
    2. Plans classroom programs in an organized timely fashion.
    3. Completes weekly/daily lesson plans on time.
    4. Submits records, requisitions, reports and plans when due.
    5. Maintains accurate daily attendance and food count.
    6. Makes use of program resource personnel in planning for children and their families.
    7. Ensures team cooperation.
    8. Supervises assistant teacher and classroom aides.
  13. Professionalism
    1. Maintains a professional attitude.
    2. Keeps abreast of early childhood education practices.
  14. Other Duties
    1. All other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • A. in Early Childhood Education.
  • One year experience teaching in a pre-school setting.
