Job Posting Title: E-Beam Lab Manager - Department of Geological Sciences ---- Hiring Department: Department of Geological Sciences ---- Position Open To: All Applicants ---- Weekly Scheduled Hours: 40 ---- FLSA Status: Exempt ---- Earliest Start Date: Immediately ---- Position Duration: Expected to Continue ---- Location: UT MAIN CAMPUS ---- Job Details: General Notes The Electron Microbeam facility in the Jackson School of Geosciences (JSG) is seeking a highly qualified researcher to oversee and operate our instrumentation, including a JEOL JXA-8200 Electron Probe Microanalyzer (EPMA); JEOL JSM-6490LV SEM with Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Electron Backscattered Diffraction Detector (EBSD) and Bruker D8 Advance X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD). The facility's vision is to develop leading capabilities of electron microbeam instrumentation to allow researchers and students in the Jackson School of Geosciences, the University of Texas at Austin, and those in the south-central region of the US to conduct a broad range of high-impact, discovery class science. The lab has a strategy to achieve this vision: (1) developing and operating efficiently and effectively, (2) creating a vibrant environment that attracts world-class scientists and (3) facilitating interactions within and among students and researchers across units of the Jackson School, the University of Texas at Austin, and the south-central US region. To be considered, applicants must have relevant work experience in the use and maintenance of electron and X-ray microbeam instruments. Applicants must commit to delivering excellence promptly and work well under pressure. Purpose This position is needed to oversee and operate our instrumentation, including a JEOL JXA-8200 Electron Probe Microanalyzer (EPMA); JEOL JSM-6490LV SEM with Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Electron Backscattered Diffraction Detector (EBSD); and Bruker D8 Advance X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD). Responsibilities Maintenance and operation of three instruments (Electron Microprobe, Scanning Electron Microscope, and X-ray Diffractometer) at full functionality with optimal performance Training and assisting new and continuing users on these instruments Developing and improving analytical protocols Compiling and maintaining records of lab activity in support of invoicing and proposal preparation Support and maintain equipment relevant to the facility Required Qualifications M.S. degree in mineral science, geosciences, geochemistry, or geoscience-related areas and have a strong background in electron microbeam methods applied to natural (geological) materials. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications PhD in mineral science, geoscience, geochemistry, or geoscience-related areas. Must be reliable, quick-learning, highly organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Work independently in a team environment and with students is essential.
