Pickle Research Campus in North Austin. Purpose Conduct field, office, and laboratory research tasks in the near-surface geophysics, GIS, and remote sensing fields under the direction of researchers in the Near Surface Observatory at The Bureau of Economic Geology. Responsibilities Assist researchers in field activities, including near-surface geophysical surveys, sediment sampling, geologic mapping, remote sensing surveys, and beach profiling. Conduct GIS-based geologic mapping and analysis. Compile and analyze results of field and laboratory activities to produce GIS data sets, graphics, and tables. Write abstracts, present results to group and at conferences, and contribute to reports and publications as a first or contributing author. Required Qualifications Master's degree in earth science with a geophysics focus and two years of related experience, or bachelor's degree with a geophysics focus and four years of related experience. Thorough knowledge of special equipment used in geologic field studies. Experience with near-surface geophysical instruments and geophysical surveying. Excellent data management skills. Able to travel for and conduct field work, sometimes in remote and uncontrolled environments. Demonstrated report writing and publication skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and professional demeanor. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Experience with near-surface geophysical instruments, including borehole logging tools, frequency- and time-domain electromagnetic induction instruments, ground-penetrating radar, and seismic survey instruments. Experience processing GPR and electromagnetic induction data. Facility with GIS software, including ArcGIS. Computer programming using current computer languages or scripting tools.
