About the Role:

The CFO, VP Finance ("CFO") is a key leadership position reporting directly to the CEO, and overseeing a finance team of 4. Working closely and partnering with the CEO, General Counsel, and all members of the executive leadership team as well as the Board, the CFO will oversee all financial matters while providing an analytical focus to the assessment of new product, customer/partner/donor, and strategic value-creation initiatives. Together with the executive leadership team, the CFO will leverage a strong reputation of entrepreneurialism, balanced with an eye for scalability, stability, and sustainability in the journey to exceptional results and value creation.

This is a unique opportunity at the intersection of technology and social impact, playing a critical role in Thorn's 5-year strategic growth plan. This remote-first position is US-based (West Coast preferred) with some travel required.

What You'll Do:

The CFO will be a key driver in Thorn's ability to achieve key milestones on its growth and sustainability plan, all in service of ending online child sexual abuse.

Strategic planning

  • Conduct meaningful proactive analysis to improve key business decisions
  • As a thought partner to the CEO, develop financial guardrails, model investment and spending scenarios in support of the business strategy
  • Own and manage financial planning, analysis, and reporting functions, including budgeting, long-term financial forecasts, and processes to support investment and spending decisions

Growth and value creation

  • Partner with the sales team to ensure that customer contracts have business terms favorable to the organization, both in terms of revenue and strategic value
  • Manage capital investments and expenses to ensure that the company achieves targets for growth and sustainability

Leadership

  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the company
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with employees, donors, customers, partners, and other key stakeholders
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CEO informed of all critical issues
  • Represent the company in alignment with the brand and organizational values
  • Improve financial acumen of the company and key non-financial leaders by developing financial and operational tools and systems that drive results, and through teaching and coaching

Financial and operational oversight

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and management guidance to grow a mission-first, self-sustaining organization
  • Monitor financial and operational performance and make recommendations for corrective measures when necessary
  • Analyze internal operations and identify areas for process enhancement balancing efficiency and effectiveness
  • Ensure that the company has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures to meet operational and financial targets
  • Assist Legal in the protection of the organization by ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and policies
  • Support HR by ensuring the appropriate allocation of staffing resources to achieve company objectives and compliance with applicable laws and policies

Thorn is tax-exempt, so the CFO does not have to manage deferred tax assets and liabilities. And while Thorn operates like a for-profit, there are no shareholders or investors to manage. Finally, Thorn holds no debt, so there are no debt covenants or debt financing obligations.

Outcome-driven entrepreneurialism with high integrity

  • Impeccable integrity, initiative, and a strong sense of urgency with a focus on results
  • Process-oriented with the ability to connect dots to create cross-organizational processes and leverage points of integration

Experience in a high-growth technology organization

  • Prior experience in a SaaS/recurring revenue business and deep understanding of KPI and metrics management

Track record of scaling revenue from $5M to >$20M

Outstanding business acumen and leadership skills

  • Strategic & logical thinker with excellent organizational skills, able to synthesize the most important data and provide real-time, meaningful insights
  • Decisive and action-oriented. Able to hit the ground running, to follow through on a strategic vision and solve problems. Shares their POV proactively, with the ability to adapt to outside factors that influence their plans

High EQ, a strong relationship builder and communicator

  • Ability to pivot from hands-on finance to team leader and strategic counsel to CEO and Board

Ability to build successful teams by inspiring confidence, building trust and leading in a positive, respectful, and productive manner

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to listen and to develop concise summaries of complex analyses and data appropriate for various levels of consumption ranging from board members to team members across the company

Financial credentials

  • 15 years of progressive experience as CFO or other relevant role (must have both finance and operational leadership experience)
  • Expertise with management information system architecture and usage
    • Complex Excel arrays, formulas, models
    • ERP (Oracle), BI (Tableau), CRM (Salesforce)
  • Prior international experience, specifically the EU, preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or other business discipline. An MBA or experience in nonprofit accounting is a plus
Compensation and Benefits

A reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role is $225,000 - $260,000. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to location; skill sets; experience and training; licensure, and certifications.

Our remote-first work model is structured around working from home most of the time. But, there will be times that employees are expected to travel. For example, Thorn may host company-wide gatherings, and smaller teams may hold in-person meetings and team-building events, or require attendance at specific conferences.
