What are the responsibilities and job description for the Managing Editor, WTMJ position at TMJ4 News?

WTMJ, The E.W. Scripps Company NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is looking for an aggressive and experienced Managing Editor to help lead our real-time coverage of daily news events.

The Managing Editor is responsible for organizing and coordinating assignment desk staff and multi-media journalists to facilitate daily news coverage for multiple platforms.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • In collaboration with the Editorial Director, the Managing Editor is responsible for daily editorial flow, including assigning multi-media journalists, photojournalists and assignment desk staff to cover daily news stories and events.
  • Makes sure News Desk is updated and accurate at all times.
  • Supervise and schedule assignment desk staff.
  • Works on the assignment desk to ensure prompt decisions are made whether on real-time coverage or other stories.
  • Tracks all stories for TMJ4 and is responsible for follow ups. This person is highly organized so as to not lose track of a story and ensures TMJ4 is following through on a story from start to finish.
  • Write and post stories for multiple platforms as needed.
  • Responsible for communication to field crews and to internal stakeholders. Gets crews deployed to breaking news quickly. Ensures other content gathered by field crews, VOSOTs, etc, is placed into newscasts by producers.
  • Assist editorial staff in developing all news coverage plans for both day to day coverage and big event coverage planning.
  • Complete and deliver performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in posting content to station websites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in positions of progressive responsibility preferred.

  • Decision making: Ties decisions to strategy, uses sound logic, makes decisions at the right time, brings others into decision making process, chooses the best alternative.
  • Coach: Continuously cultivates capabilities by asking the right questions and equipping staff with tools, knowledge and opportunities they need to develop themselves.
  • Delegation: is clear about lines of responsibility, allows staff to make mistakes, offers guidance without taking over, enables team to manage daily operation of their teams.
