The Sr interpreter performs advanced, interpreting work in a highly dynamic, technical business environment via video conference and in-person for high stakes and sensitive meetings, employee webcasts, and negotiations with external customers and organizations. They work autonomously, building and maintaining rapport to expand professional relationships with customers, vendor-colleagues, business partners, and mixed collaborator groups. They are a thought and action leader with high-risk interpreting-operations projects that remove communication barriers, ensure seamless communication access for all participants, and model the highest quality of professionalism. They proactively engage with peers and contractors to appropriately prepare for assigned meetings, mentors team interpreters, and are open to feedback from peers and consumers to continuously improve their craft. Demonstrated commitment to adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct, knowledge of power, privilege and oppression inclusion practices and other national professional standards critical.
Job Responsibilities:
The Sr interpreter must be expertly adept in handling conference call interactions, in-person meetings, and multifaceted, sophisticated language needs for several hours per day with a large, diverse group of Deaf employees.
Interprets high-risk communication predominately from ASL to English involving peers, contractors, and employees.
Acquire and review relevant linguistic prep materials and contribute to assessment of interpreting talent-matches per event/project to ensure accuracy and efficacy of the interpretation.
Engages in professional development relevant to the position, provides peer-mentoring, and brings learning to the team to stay up to date on trends and standard methodologies in this environment.
Optimally provides tactile/pro-tactile interpreting and basic co-navigating needs for DeafBlind professionals in the workplace and professional settings.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree o or equivalent professional experience in lieu of degree
Work Experience:
2-4 years Working with individuals who are DeafBlind and using tactile/pro-tactile communication
6 years post national certification - Expert-level communication facilitation between English, American Sign Language, and Conceptually Accurate Signed English
6 years - Professional interpreting experience in technical settings
6 years - Experience in interpreting in remote settings including but not limited to Webex, Zoom, MS Teams, and others
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Business Acumen: Sr. Interpreter demonstrates superior ASL to English interpretation skills specific to business settings involving multiple Deaf and hearing participants
Tactile/Pro-Tactile interpreting specialization skills
Confidentiality: Ability to handle confidential information
Task Management: Ability to multi-task and juggle between different meeting platforms during conference calls
Video Conferencing: Expert knowledge in maneuvering a variety of virtual interpreting platforms and multiple screens; Webex, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and others simultaneously
Microsoft Office: Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office applications
Licenses and Certifications:
Certification in the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), BEI Master or above
State licensure as residency (Required)
• At least 18 years of age
• Legally authorized to work in the United States
