Position: Code Compliance Officer

Department: Planning and Zoning

Job Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week)


Position Description:

The individual will ensure compliance with building maintenance and property maintenance codes, and other regulations or ordinances, in assigned areas of the Town for the Code Compliance Division of the Community Development Department. Performs technical and administrative work related to the inspection of land development regulations to ensure compliance with the Town of Abingdon Zoning, Subdivision, and other Town Ordinances.

  • Ability to assure compliance with regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Effectively manage case file information.
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with co-workers, officials, and the public.
  • Possess excellent computer skills and professional telephone etiquette.

Ability to obtain qualifications:

  • Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development certification as a Property Maintenance Inspector is required within eighteen (18) months of employment
  • Certification by the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials as a Certified Zoning Official (CZO) is required within eighteen (18) months of employment.
