TAX OFFICE - FINANCE DEPARTMENT
TAX CLERK I
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This work involves the routine receiving and recording of tax and sewer assessment payments and performing other clerical tasks in the Tax Office. Assists in daily posting of tax receipts and monthly reports.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Collector of Revenue or his/her designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Regular & punctual attendance; assists in the daily opening and closing of the Tax office; receives and records receipts, tax/sewer assessment payments; checks records for back tax/sewer assessment payments; calculates interest penalties and delinquent taxes; operates computer terminal for posting receipts; answers inquiries at the counter or by phone for lawyers, real estate brokers, accountants, taxpayers, Motor Vehicle Department and others; cashes out cash drawer and balances receipts; opens and separates mail; enters tax and sewer assessment payments sent by mail into terminal; helps prepare tax bills and notices and assists in preparation of mailings; prepares bank deposits in absence of Tax Clerk II; update changes and make corrections to rate books, bills and notices; releases tax and sewer liens; coordinates collection of bad checks; secures office at end of day in absence of Tax Clerk II.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
NOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Good knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; good knowledge of tax department operation, policies, practices and terminology; working knowledge of rules, regulations, laws and ordinances pertaining to the collection of taxes; skill in the operation of modern office machines such as calculator, adding machine, typewriter; ability to make moderately complex computations with speed and accuracy; some ability to type; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to work in harmony with others; neat appearance; dependability; honesty; tact. Must be proficient on the computer.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma (GED) and three (3) years of experience in clerical or cashiering work involving considerable math computing, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
