ASSIGNMENT LEVEL I
Performs manual work in grounds and landscape maintenance. Work may involve some construction related duties.
ESSENTIAL FEATURES:
Provides lawn care and establishment activities, prepares site for planting flower bulbs, grass, plants and shrubs.
Mows, fertilizes and aerates lawns, trims shrubbery and hedges and cleans walks and pathways on all Town properties.
Performs all activities necessary for the establishment and maintenance of athletic fields, parks, school grounds, etc. including spring clean up and fall leaf removal, hauling and mulching.
Cleans and provides routine maintenance of workplace (shed) areas.
Assists with snow and ice removal efforts at all Town parks, recreational facilities, municipal facilities, and schools; may assist the Highway Division of the Department of Public Works with the removal of snow from roads and walks.
May assist with application of chemicals for pest management in accordance with Parks and Trees Division Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy, if properly licensed to do so.
Clears parks, athletic fields, school grounds and town facility grounds of litter, glass and other trash; picks-up refuse and recycling cans and loads trucks;
Collects and hauls leaves from parks, athletic fields, school grounds and town facility grounds and disposes of them into truck or leaf vacuum machines.
Maintains Parks and Trees Division equipment in good working order, reporting problems to supervisor and assisting with routine maintenance and repair jobs as required.
Performs other related work as required.
ASSIGNMENT LEVEL II
Performs skilled work in grounds and turf maintenance and landscaping. Work involves planting, propagation, cultivation and identification of plants and shrubs and familiarity with commonly used plant materials in use in the landscape trades. Performs semi-skilled construction maintenance involving installation and repair of parks and grounds equipment and facilities.
In addition to performing tasks described under Assignment Level I, performs tasks as indicated in the following:
ESSENTIAL FEATURES:
Plants, prunes, and cultivates trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials associated with the landscape trade, may apply pesticides.
Fertilizes and applies pesticides to lawns and maintains grounds of a variety of buildings and facilities.
Serves as greens keeper maintaining the turf ensuring proper drainage, fertilization and aeration. Relocates holes to eliminate uneven wear of turf. Maintains golf course equipment such as benches, ball washers and tee markers. Changes cups, pins, etc.
Serves as groundskeeper, assisting tree trimmers with sawing, cutting and clearing of limbs and brush on the ground.
Prepares athletic fields; performs routine custodial work; installs and maintains play equipment, benches, tables, bleachers, etc.
Operates all Parks and Tree Division mechanical grounds maintenance equipment including standard shift vehicles, light truck, tractors and snow plows.
Services mechanical grounds maintenance equipment and makes minor repairs as required.
Performs custodial and semi-skilled maintenance and repair of equipment and building facilities.
May service and/or make minor repairs to related small equipment as required.
Picks up and delivers supplies to facilities, files records, and assists in record keeping and inventory.
Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of good work habits necessary to perform successfully in a semi-skilled laboring position including maintaining safety and attendance standards.
Working knowledge of practical gardening, grounds-keeping methods, tools, and equipment.
Ability and mechanical aptitude to quickly learn assigned skilled and semi-skilled tasks on the job.
Ability to read and write English.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees and with the general public.
Ability to operate all mechanical grounds maintenance equipment, tractors and power tools.
Ability to operate all Parks and Trees Division motor vehicles that do not require a CDL license.
Ability to make minor repairs on benches, tables, bleachers, and playground equipment.
Ability to perform the physically demanding tasks required to perform function of position, including the ability to lift 20 lbs constantly and heavy weight occasionally throughout the day, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending and cleaning.
Ability to make oneself available for overtime and overtime call-outs especially for winter snow removal operations.
Ability to work indoors and out-of-doors, on high and low levels for lengthy periods of time, in various types of weather.
Ability to operate equipment standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time.
Skilled in pruning, planting, fertilizing, and cultivating plants, shrubs, and lawns.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR ASSIGNMENT TO LEVEL II:
Working knowledge of the technical names and characteristics of the more common plants and shrubbery.
Ability to obtain and maintain pesticide applicators license and apply pesticides for pest management in accordance with Parks and Trees Division Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy.
Skilled in pruning, planting, fertilizing and cultivating plants, shrubs, and lawns.
