Performs responsible professional assignments involving field inspections of construction work in progress and examination of architectural and engineering plans and specifications to insure that designs and work performed are in accordance with the CT State Building Code. Consults with professional architects and engineers, contractors and general public regarding code violations noted and issues orders, to same, requiring compliance with codes and standards.
Works independently in the field and is responsible for making highly technical code related decisions requiring diplomacy, discretion and good judgment; makes proper field inspections and decisions to insure that construction projects are built in accordance with approved plans and specifications and minimum code standards prior to the Division issuing the required Certificate of Occupancy/Compliance.
Responsible for assisting and directing professional architects and engineers, contractors and general public in solving difficult code related technical problems that arise during field inspections of construction in progress.
Reports to the Deputy Building Official.
Special Necessary Requirements:
Must possess a State of Connecticut E-2 electrical license and an Electrical Inspector’s license from the State of Connecticut at the time of application
Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle license to drive in Connecticut.
Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge of all facets of building construction with extensive knowledge of electrical components and construction methods and the National Electrical Code.
Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing and maintaining a wide variety of electrical systems, equipment and appliances and of various standard testing devices.
Considerable knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances and of effective corrective measures.
Working knowledge of plumbing/HVAC systems, building construction, and structural methods.
Skilled in the use of a personal computer and related software applications, as well as standard office equipment.
Skilled in the use of tools of the electrical trade and standard electrical testing devices.
Ability to review electrical drawings with a thorough understanding of the design of electrical systems including, but not limited to, electrical service sizing.
Ability to detect and locate violations of the NEC during site inspections of construction and on plans during plan review of drawings.
Ability to make sound judgments based on valid interpretations of permit, licensing and code regulations and to enforce difficult decisions with tact, courtesy and respect.
Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously with co-workers and to establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships with building owners, architects, contractors, attorneys, public officials and the general public.
Ability to make field inspections involving climbing a ladder, crawling in an attic or crawl space or other similar spaces and the agility to negotiate a construction site to make a proper inspection.

The examination to determine a candidate's eligibility for the position will be a Training and Experience Assessment. Duties and Responsibilities:
Reviews electrical plans and designs of larger projects for compliance with the NEC prior to the issuance of a building permit. Consults with and gives assistance to contractors, design engineers and the public with respect to electrical installations and the provisions of CSBC and NEC.
Conducts field inspections and is responsible for making independent decisions requiring technical discretion and good judgment; consulting with the Building Official or Deputy Building Official on difficult or unusual enforcement issues.
Inspects new installations of electrical wiring, fixtures; and other electrical systems in new and existing buildings for compliance with code regulations, standards of workmanship and safety.
Performs on-call inspections as requested by superiors, Greenwich Fire Department and Greenwich Police Department of fire, flood or other disaster situations involving building structures and public safety. Works with local utility companies to coordinate utility “shut downs” to insure public safety. Determines status of structures, deeming them dangerous and/or unsafe for human occupancy according to the CT State Building Code and related safety standards. May assist in related investigations.
Provides accurate and detailed information to attorneys, contractors, general public, both in the office and during field investigations regarding State and local permit, licensing and code regulations. Assists the Building Official in his/her State mandated duties of enforcing the CT State Building Code and referenced technical standards.
Compiles correspondence reports on complaints, special assignments and inspections; assists Building Official and Building Code Engineer in reviewing plans for compliance with the NEC prior to the issuance of a building permit.
Reviews electrical permit applications for adequate electrical service size and compliance with the NEC prior to issuance of electrical permits.
Maintains current knowledge of changing industry technology, new construction techniques and materials. Attends continuing educational seminars on industry code changes and updates to ensure proper enforcement of State codes and standards.
Prepares daily inspection reports. Accountable for accuracy of permit files and records.
Performs other related work as required, including minor building, plumbing and HVAC inspections.
