The Town of Herndon has an immediate need for a Utility Equipment Operator II in the Department of Public Works, Streets department. This department is oversees all construction and land development, building inspections, water and sewer maintenance and street maintenance, and coordinates trash and recycling collection, snow removal and municipal building and park maintenance. As a Utility Equipment Operator II, you will operate and provide general maintenance of medium to heavy equipment and perform street maintenance and repair.

In this position, you will support the Town of Herndon by:

  • Operating and providing general maintenance for medium to heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Repairing potholes, fences, signs, and roads within the town limits and ensure road markings are properly painted.
  • Serving as lead worker on job sites as needed.
  • Cleaning town streets with sweeper vehicle, collecting leaves during leaf collection season, roadside trash, and cleaning ditches and storm sewers.
  • Setting up safe work zones and flag traffic during road and rights-of-way maintenance.
  • Laying brick for sidewalks, crosswalks, and other walkways.
  • Performing snow, ice, and other emergency services in the town as needed.
  • Assisting with special town events as needed.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of experience involving heavy equipment and vehicle operation.
  • Flagger Certificate or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within one year of hire.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes, or the ability to obtain within one year of hire, and acceptable driving record. CDL employees are subject to preemployment and random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and/or push and pull moderately heavy objects and material (20-50 pounds) and may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
  • Ability to identify, arrange, compare, count, differentiate, and measure and sort a variety of data and information.
  • Ability to utilize established policies, procedures, and standards to obtain and clarify details.
  • Ability to properly operate equipment, machinery, tools, and materials used in performing the essential functions of the role.
  • Proven ability to carry out written or oral instructions.
  • Proven ability to exercise good judgement.

Essential Personnel Notice:
This position is considered "essential personnel"; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.

Tasks may risk exposure to adverse, environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease and pathogenic substances.

Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
