The Town of Norway, Maine is seeking a Tax Assessor. This is a regular full-time 40 hours per week position.

The Town of Norway has a population of approximately 5,077 full-time residents. The town is a located in the Oxford Hills Region of the State. The Town of Norway has an Historic downtown center that is a vibrant destination to shop, eat and relax. The Town of Norway is located one hour from Portland, one hour from Augusta and one hour from North Conway,

NH.

Assessor is responsible for the planning of all aspects of the appraisal of real and personal property for assessment purposes for the Town of Norway. This is specialized and technical work in the evaluation and assessment of real and personal property.

Essential responsibilities:

-Maintain and administer the Town’s assessment program to appraise all real and personal property for property tax purposes, developing all building cost and land valuation tables as needed, to ensure property values are accurate.

-Supervise the systematic review of all transfers of ownership of real and personal property, developing and carrying out all necessary recordkeeping for future reference.

-Supervise the annual development of changes to the municipality’s tax maps, considering such information as deeds and boundary surveys.

-Review all exemption applications and render a decision under the guidelines of the applicable

State laws.

-Coordinate with Finance staff to provide data necessary to administer any tax refund.

-Provide data files with accurate valuation amounts to import into tax billing software.

-Prepare necessary federal, state, and local reports.

-Maintain a list of all exempt properties.

-Complete accurate and timely annual Municipal Valuation Return and Sales Ratio Study for

Maine Revenue Service.

-Work cooperatively, effectively, and productively with supervisors, co-workers, taxpayers, and the public.

Bachelor’s degree or combined education and experience that provides the ability to perform the work is required.

Must hold Certified Maine Assessor designation or have the ability to obtain one within 18 months of hire. Must maintain this certification throughout employment.
