Archaeologist / Cultural Resource Specialist 

 

Established in 1999, Transcon Environmental, Inc., offers environmental consulting services throughout the United States with our Corporate Office based in Mesa, AZ and offices in Ferndale, San Francisco, and Santa Rosa, California; Cedar City and Draper, Utah; Rawlins, Wyoming; and Roanoke, Virginia.

Our highly successful team of environmental planners, biologists, and archaeologists provides environmental planning, permitting, and compliance as well as infrastructure siting, Class I and Class III studies, Historic Property Treatment Plans, and environmental construction management and monitoring. We are seeking qualified archaeologists for various assignments, with day-to-day work activities conducted in the field as well as via remote home office setting. Work conditions can be expected to be primarily field based with approximately 10-15% in an office setting. Work will include both single-day and multiple-day assignments.  Successful applicants should be able to work long days in the field, in a range of seasonal weather conditions, traverse several miles of rough terrain, and carry field gear, and not be opposed to camping (campground and/or primitive) when no hotel accommodations are available due to remoteness of work/project location.

Travel will be required for most projects. Drive time is paid. When working multi-day assignments, employee will be reimbursed for meals, lodging, and mileage, if applicable.  

 

Compensation is based on qualifications and relevant experience.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with environmental compliance reviews
  • Conducting cultural resource surveys, monitoring, and inventory
  • Conducting archaeological testing and excavation
  • Recording sites and isolates and drafting associated reports and site forms
  • Performing archaeological monitoring during construction activities to ensure resource protection measures are being implemented
  • Acting as crew member or Field Director/Crew Chief on fieldwork assignments
  • Assisting in conducting literature reviews and records searches
  • Work will primarily be field based; successful applicants should be capable of working long days in the field throughout the year, including single- and multi-day assignments


Skills and Requirements:

  • S. degree (M.S. preferred) in archaeology or other closely related field
  • Proficiency in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in applicable state(s) and region
  • Proficiency in report writing and site form preparation in applicable state(s) and region
  • Minimum of 1-year professional experience in archaeological fieldwork to include site recordation, survey, and excavation
  • Proficiency with standard field equipment and technology
  • Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently with short deadlines, as well as working in a team setting
  • Ability to interact and coordinate with federal, state, local, and tribal agencies
  • Organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
  • Reliable personal vehicle, excellent navigational skills, and a good driving record

 

 

Experience in the following is preferred:

  • Proficiency with sub-meter GPS
  • Permitted or permittable in applicable state(s) and on agency lands (Field Director, Crew Chief, Principal Investigator)
  • Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with typical transmission or electrical utility operations and maintenance activities
  • Familiarity with compliance inspection contracting for large projects
  • Familiarity with ESRI GIS applications (including desktop, ArcGIS, Collector, Survey123, etc.)
  • Experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle off-road or in rough terrain
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and communicating with field and construction crews

 

Applicants must have a clean driving record for at least 5 years prior to the start of work. Offers of employment will be contingent on the candidate passing a background check, drug, (including marijuana/THC) and alcohol testing.
