Transitions of PA, a non-profit comprehensive victim service center serving Union, Snyder, and Northumberland counties, is seeking a passionate, energetic, self-motivated professional to fill its Legal Advocate position. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week, non-exempt position with competitive wages and a comprehensive benefits package. The Legal Advocate specializes in legal advocacy services, acts as an agency resource on legal issues, provides systems advocacy and direct services to victims and survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This position includes participation in on-call duties and may require evening and weekend hours as well.
The Legal Advocate works mainly out of Transitions’ Lewisburg office but will also have hours spent in a satellite offices or the County Courthouses as well as any other location within Transitions’ service area where service provision for victims is required.
Responsibilities require the exercise of independent judgment and knowledge of overall agency activities.
- Provide crisis counseling and trauma-informed, victim-centered support services to adult, teen, and child victims and survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and other serious crimes.
- Assist clients in obtaining protection orders and filing for custody, including assisting with filling out court documents and paperwork, providing accompaniment to hearings, and serving as a resource on state law and local procedures.
- Accompany victims for criminal proceedings against their abuser.
- Refer clients to Transitions Legal Center as necessary.
- Provide or arrange transportation to civil and criminal court filings or proceedings related to the abuse or assault.
- Develop relationships with local law enforcement, court officials, judges, and other local professionals and advocate with same to address clients’ concerns.
- Act as a legal resource person to Transitions’ staff, criminal justice professionals, and other social service organizations.
- Participate in the on-call rotation.
The ideal candidate will have experience in systems change work, strong interpersonal skills, professional demeanor, and the ability to communicate clearly and confidently in spoken and written form. They must be comfortable with and enjoy interfacing with the law enforcement and court systems and passionate about advocacy for victims, and victims rights.
Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and a willingness to travel for the role.
