Under general direction, lead an underwriting team for assigned region(s). Provide supervision and support consistent with goals, objectives and standards to support achievement of the company and team quality, productivity, customer service and financial objectives. Ensures underwriters properly develop & analyze risks, make sound underwriting decisions, execute those decisions, work efficiently, and provide excellent agent/customer experience.Travelers offers a hybrid work location model that is designed to support flexibility.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
- This job manages a team of underwriters (approximately 10 or more) in conjunction with partnership for a Region or function line of business.
- Provides technical mentoring support for underwriting team members.
- Regularly assesses employee skills and performance with timely feedback and coaching activities.
- Consults with Underwriters on complex/gray risks. Has authority to approve UW exceptions.
- Identifies trends and training needs from the team's quality assurance process & audits.
- Implements action plans to address underwriting quality gaps.
- Provides guidance to underwriters to ensure quality underwriting decisions are consistent with company policies and programs, and in compliance with state laws and regulations.
- Reviews underwriting exception activities and provides timely approval as needed.
- Reviews and approves risks outside of underwriter authority.
- Performs call monitoring reviews and provides feedbacks to team to improve their individual and team performance.
- Monitors team’s and center’s workload, workflow and turnaround time, to ensure maximum efficiency in the underwriting team.
- Conducts side by sides with team to improve performance in risk analysis, efficiency, and customer experience.
- Prepares & conducts training sessions: individual or classroom.
- Recommends workflow/process improvements to upper management.
- Engages Underwriters:
- Communicates and leads team to help them understand changes.
- Keeps up to date on regulatory changes and other ongoing training.
- Assesses reformation, ex-gratia and recission requests.
- Leads medium complexity projects and coordinates aspects of more complex projects with minimal supervision. Consistently demonstrates ability to influence and use effective communication skills in team or project settings.
- Performs other related duties as required for
- performance management.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with business partners.
- Supports Regional/Territory business direction & initiatives, including travel as needed.
- Proactively addresses agent issues/concerns with Underwriters.
- Handles and quickly resolves agent escalations.
- Provides mentoring support for underwriting team member(s).
- Accountable for hiring, training, and making compensation decisions.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2 years of underwriting experience underwriting, service, sales, claims and/or related operational experience required.
- 1 year experience guiding the work of others.
Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge
- College degree preferred.
- 4 or more years of Underwriting experience in all major lines preferred.
- 2 or more years experience managing others.
- Advanced knowledge and ability to explain Travelers underwriting philosophy.
- Advanced understanding of regulatory and compliance laws.
- Demonstrated leading employees, coaching, and training skills.
- Ability to quickly deescalate agent/employee issues.
- Demonstrated operational skills balancing phones, inventory, turnaround time, customer experience, and critical thinking.
Job Specific Technical Skills & Competencies
- Superior knowledge in Business Line Products, Underwriting, Independent Agency Operations, and Systems.
- Advanced critical thinking & analysis skills to aide underwriting decision making.
- Advanced verbal & written communication skills to explain what is needed or decisions and why.
- Advanced inquisitive skills- ability to draw out information via conservation: investigative skills in via positive and natural means.
- Advanced agency/customer experience skills including de-escalation of problems.
- Demonstrated leadership skills including rapport building and conflict management skills.
