Job Description: The Laboratory assistant is an integral part of our laboratory team, reporting directly to the Laboratory Operations Manager. The lab assistants job duties involve a wide range of responsibilities crucial to the efficient operation of our toxicology laboratory. Laboratory Assistant will handle tasks such as cleaning, inventory management, specimen processing, and various administrative duties. The Laboratory Assistant will assist Medical Technologists with patient testing in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures, payor requirements, as well as applicable state and federal requirements, including CLIA regulations. As part of such duties, this position would also be responsible for assisting with specimen processing and other duties described below with minimal supervision, while maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties that are assigned. Stocking Inventory: Monitor inventory levels of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables. Restock and organize supplies as needed. Assist in tracking and managing inventory databases. Notify the Laboratory Operations Manager of low inventory levels. Cleaning and Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the laboratory. Regularly clean, sanitize, and maintain laboratory equipment, workspaces, and common areas including restrooms. Comply with safety and cleanliness standards and protocols. Collaborate with the team to ensure a safe and efficient work environment. Support building maintenance activities as assigned. Contribute to the maintenance of common areas and ensure a clean, welcoming facility. Receiving Specimens: Receive incoming specimens in accordance with established procedures. Verify the accuracy of specimen information and accompanying documentation. Safely handle and store specimens, following appropriate protocols. Accessioning: Prepare specimens for testing by accessioning, labeling, and tracking. Ensure accurate organization and storage of specimens for easy retrieval and reference. Send Out: Prepare specimens for send-out testing as required. Package specimens securely and follow shipping guidelines for sending specimens to external labs. Fax, Shipping, Phone Calls: Facilitate the receipt and transmission of faxes as needed. Prepare packages for shipping through various carriers. Answer incoming phone calls professionally, provide assistance or direct calls to the relevant staff members. Other Duties as Assigned: Collaborate effectively within the laboratory team, contributing to a positive work environment. Demonstrate punctuality and reliability in work habits. Be adaptable to take on additional responsibilities or tasks as required by the Laboratory Operations Manager. Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to work well in a group setting and independently. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; coursework or certification in a relevant field is advantageous. While previous experience in a laboratory or medical setting is preferred, it is not a strict requirement. Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Basic knowledge of laboratory safety practices and cleaning protocols. Computer proficiency for data entry and inventory management. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret human service periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally lifts/carries paperwork, files, office supplies, up to 20 lbs., pushes/pulls exerting up to 5-10 lbs. force, opening doors, file drawers, pushing files in drawers, and kneeling/crouching and/or ability to reach lower file drawers, file stretching to store of retrieve materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent sitting at desk or computer while typing, completing paperwork, or meeting with patients. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Normal office environment where there is no physical discomfort cue to temperature, dust, noise, and the like.
