GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Program Team Lead, the Substance Use Disorder Counselor is responsible for providing professional mental health or substance use services and consultation to consumers, local agencies and other professionals in the community, as needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assesses and evaluates clients for substance use and mental health issues and provides individual and group education and counseling sessions.
  • Provides counseling and/or therapy according to a plan of care developed from assessment and diagnostic evaluation.
  • Evaluates and assesses the holistic needs of the individual clients.
  • Develops a written plan of care in conjunction with the clients, the client's family where appropriate, and significant others in accordance with clients /family needs and in compliance with agency procedures. Adheres to Medicaid and Medicare regulations for plans of care, when appropriate.
  • Utilizes the client's electronic health record (EHR) to ensure that documentation is complete, accurate, timely and meets regulatory and agency standards.
  • Educates and instructs clients and significant others in prevention and rehabilitative measures appropriate for the client's care and safety.
  • Refers clients to other professionals or services as appropriate to ensure optimal service.
  • Participates in scheduled meetings, including case reviews, supervisory sessions, staff meetings and other inter-agency and intra-agency meetings as appropriate for program and clients.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Duties require knowledge of substance use issues equivalent to completion of a high school diploma and one to three years of related work experience in substance use field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of CADC certification is required.
  • Must possess a valid State of Maine driver's license.
  • Experience and knowledge of the addictive process.
  • Ability to understand and appreciate the dynamics of working with persons with mental illness or with substance use problems, and persons seeking to enhance personal growth and functioning toward more effective living.

Salary : $31,200 - $39,500
