Position Summary:
- Continually observes patients’ electrocardiographic patterns and accurately recognizes and reports abnormalities and arrhythmias to Registered Nurse. Completed documentation according to hospital policy in logbook and medical record.
What the Cardiac Monitor Tech will do:
- Observes patient’s condition and progress (or lack of progress) toward defined outcomes, in collaboration with the RN; and documents observations.
- Observes ECG monitors, recognizes abnormalities, trends or technically inadequate results, troubleshoots and/or reports these results to appropriate nursing personnel.
- Answers alarms immediately. Implements emergency protocols for life-threatening and potentially life-threatening dysrhythmias
- Assures communication between Monitor Tech and caregiver available at all times.
- Documents hourly on each patient rhythm strip: rhythm, rate, dysrhythmia, ST segment abnormalities
- Writes preliminary interpretation of the rhythm strip for the RN to validate (i.e.. PR intervals, QRS duration, QT intervals and rate)
- Prior to end of shift, reports on a nursing unit sheet for each monitored patient: rate range, rhythm, dysrhythmias and ST segment abnormalities
- Collaborates with nursing staff for questions and clarification of monitoring questions.
- Coordinates information to ancillary departments for patient testing and transport.
- Facilitates self-education
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Whatthe Cardiac Monitor Techwill need:
Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Successfully complete initial EKG competency assessment and all subsequent assessments. Ability to trust own judgment and implement emergency protocols when necessary. Ability to effectively problem solve situations to achieve the desired outcome
Preferred:
- Completion of a nursing assistant program. Phlebotomy trained or phlebotomy technical school. Associate degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- One or more years of college desired with desire for progressively more challenging work assignments.
- Previous experience in an acute care hospital is desirable. Previous EKG, 12 lead EKG and patient care experience preferred.
