General Description: Perform custodial work required for the routine care, maintenance, protection, and preservation of the assigned building, its contents, and grounds.
Essential Functions
- Performs and is directly responsible for the routine maintenance and repair of the building and its equipment, plus all phases of housekeeping duties.
- Develops and ensures proper function of work, inspection, maintenance, and cleaning schedules with the cooperation of the maintenance director, principal and/or designee.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and neat boiler room (if applicable).
- Removes snow, ice, debris from walks, steps, and entry ways.
- Helps unload trucks, receives, checks, and stores supplies.
- Does required tasks such as sweeping, mopping floors, emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, trash, and pencil sharpeners, refilling towel and soap dispensers, and toilet tissue on a daily basis; corridors may need more frequent attention; other tasks such as removing cobwebs, cleaning high traffic area windows, cleaning all chalkboards on a weekly basis; and other tasks such as waxing floors, dusting, polishing furniture and woodwork as necessary and washing all windows in assigned area at least twice each year.
- Keeps buildings in a neat and presentable fashion; play areas neat and clean
- Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (if applicable) to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and ensures economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Remains on school property during scheduled work hours unless permission to leave is granted by the administration.
- Opens and secures the building each day; turns on/off lights as requested.
- Cleans and maintains custodial equipment and materials.
- Keeps the school yard mowed and maintained in a neat and well-kept fashion as requested.
- Reports areas that need special maintenance or cleaning to the maintenance director.
- Assists in moving and arranging furniture and equipment as requested.
- Makes minor repairs to building, furniture, equipment, and so forth, and reports the need
- Reports any damage to school property immediately to maintenance director and administration
- Replenishes supplies in rest rooms; changes ballasts and light bulbs.
- Cleans exit mats periodically as needed.
- Cooperates with others on staff.
- Assist lunchroom personnel in the housekeeping duties of the kitchen and cafeteria,
- Completes reports and forms as required.
- Complies with local, state, and federal laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Cleans building during the summer under the supervision of the maintenance director principal, and/or local superintendent.
- Cleans ventilator filters in rooms during summer.
- Reports problems of a custodial nature to the maintenance director; if unresolved, then the principal, and so forth.
- Picks up mail daily at local post office.
- Checks in with high school secretary and elementaryI superintendent secretary daily between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. for any messages, special requests, or room deliveries. Gives report of general whereabouts on an hourly basis.
- Helps with minor repairs to school buses and minor service needs such as checking oil, brake fluid, jumping buses to get started or charging batteries.
- Unlocks building in morning as requested by maintenance director or administration and has building prepared for classes and total building use.
- Installs barriers in hallways when appropriate.
- Secures assigned portion of the building, including closing doors and windows, and turns out proper lights when finished cleaning.
- Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings;
- Helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values; and
- Conducts other duties related to the custodian's duties as assigned by the maintenance director, principal, and/or local superintendent of schools.
- The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
- Occasional operation of a truck or vehicle under inclement weather conditions.
- Occasional interaction among unruly children.
