SUMMARY:
Corrections Officers participate in the day-to-day operations of the jail. Their primary functions are, but not limited to, the preservation and protection of life and property, prevention of crime and escape, booking and releasing offenders, maintaining security of the facility, escorting offenders within and/or outside the secure confines of the jail. In addition, Corrections Officers effectively manage volatile and violent offenders, operate central control and fulfill a number of clerical duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Corrections Officers must maintain the trust and confidence of the Sheriff in order to continue the ability to perform their jobs. The primary function of any public servant is to provide a service to the community they serve by diligently and efficiently adhering to the guidelines provided in this job description.
Corrections Officers must communicate effectively with a varied population of offenders, including individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds.
This may include persons for whom English is not a primary language, persons with developmental and learning disorders, or individuals with a wide variety of psychiatric and physical disorders.
Corrections Officers first and primary duty is to provide supervision and security to the facility. Corrections Officers will provide supervision of offenders within the housing areas of the jail. This will include supervision during meal service, security checks, medication distribution, and random or scheduled housing and cell searches. They will also be responsible for the general offender behavior in areas assigned as their duty station, and directly supervise and escort offenders within the secure perimeter of the jail as assigned. Additionally, they will: Fill out and deliver disciplinary reports and inmate requests/grievances to the shift supervisor; conduct inspections and shakedowns as directed; supervise the feeding of inmates and maintain accountability of all trays and utensils; supervise the cleaning of the inmate living quarters and common areas during his/her tour of duty; ensure that inmates maintain good personal hygiene and that each has the basic necessities to do so; supervise inmate visits as directed; search all inmates entering the jail and/or visitors as directed; and make pertinent observations to the shift supervisor concerning inmate behavior and/or classification.
Corrections Officers will efficiently and accurately complete Corrections paperwork including but not limited to: Booking, release records, reports, inmate head counts, logs, requests, and memos. Furthermore, Corrections Officers will assist in some clerical and reception work to support facility programs when clerical staff is unavailable.
Corrections Officers will tactfully and courteously establish and maintain effective working relationships with the following: Supervisors, co-workers, outside law enforcement agencies, other county departments or agencies, and members of the public.
Corrections Officers will immediately and appropriately respond to emergencies in the jail, which may include the following: Offender assaults, fires, riots, offender disturbances, explosions, natural disasters, and hostage conditions. This may involve the use of appropriate levels of force through physical management of combative, volatile, hostile and assaultive offenders.
Corrections Officers will accurately operate a variety of equipment, including, but not limited to the body scanner, computers, printers, FAX and fingerprint machines, digital imaging computers, physical restraint devices, Tasers, radios, fire extinguishers, intercom systems, telephones, TV monitors, electric door locks and equipment found in the central control room.
Corrections Officers work a variety of rotating shifts, and may have to perform other duties as assigned or required. Corrections Officers may additionally be required to work overtime up to 16 hours.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Academy (O.P.O.T.A.) Basic Course for Corrections Officer during their probationary period.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The primary working location for this position is the Trumbull County Jail. Depending upon future work assignments, Corrections Officers may also be required to work other locations to accommodate the mission of the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office.
This position may require rotating shifts assignments, operating on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week schedule where Corrections Officers are subject to both voluntary and mandatory overtime as well as working Holidays.
Corrections Officers will be exposed to a physically challenging environment, which may include; exposure to Blood borne and Airborne pathogens, physical assault, verbal assault, loud noises, prolonged sitting, and restricted movement inside and outside of the facility.
