JOB TITLE: Network Fiber Technician

DEPARTMENT: SALISH NETWORKS

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under minimal supervision, repair, maintain, test, proof or adjust as needed all fiber optic
cables and related equipment for residential, business and Tribal Government operations in coordination with
the Infrastructure Team. Ensure maximum quality and peak performance and reliability of all fiber optic
equipment. Respond to fiber damage events, perform splicing repairs of fiber optic cables and report all
information concerning damages.

EMPLOYEE SUPERVISES: NONE

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required

SKILLS:

  • Ability to prioritize and complete assignments and tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to perform fusion splicing on new and existing plant to include Multi and Single Mode fiber optic

cables, Butt splicing, mid-entry and splice on connectors

  • Ability to work with multiple fiber optic connector types to include SC, LC and ST
  • Ability to work with multiple fiber optic enclosure types, to include rack mount, outside plant, aerial and

underground

  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex fiber optic connections
  • Ability to physically install, move, test and verify fiber optic connections
  • Ability to perform work from bucket truck and lifts
  • Ability to use testing and troubleshooting tools such as OTDR, VFL and power meter
  • Ability to compose routine reports, documentation, and update fiber plant data bases
  • Ability to work well under pressure and within time-constraints


  • Ability to work within a dynamic work environment

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience installing fiberoptic backbone for outside plant construction
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience installing fiber data circuits in a business and residential

environment

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with buried cabling services
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in open trench environment with underground utilities

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working knowledge of Fiber plant industry standards
  • Working knowledge of cable termination standards and techniques to include copper cable
  • Proficient in the use of diagnostic and fiber plant tools
  • General knowledge of fiber plant software
  • Must be able to perform day-to-day fiber splicing, terminations and cabling connections
  • Must be able to reliably respond to fiber damage events, perform splicing repairs of fiber optic cables and

report all information concerning damages in a timely manner

  • Must be willing to work in all kinds of environments, to include stormy and inclement weather
  • Must be willing to attend progressive job-related training as requested
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed or requested
  • Must have a successful employment history with the Tulalip Tribes and/or other current and past

employers

  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to successfully pass an initial and periodic background check with various local and federal

law enforcement agencies as a condition of/and continued employment

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND/OR PREREQUISITES:

  • Manual and finger dexterity for the operation of a personal computer and routine paperwork
  • Stamina to sit, stand, and/or walk for prolonged periods of time
  • Stamina to work with hands above head for prolonged periods of time
  • Mobility to bend, stoop, and/or climb stair on an occasional basis
  • Strength to lift object weighing up to 50 lbs frequently, and objects weighting up to 75lbs occasionally

SPECIFIC JOB PERFORMED:

  • Independently identify, prioritize and complete all work associated with management of fiber plant
components


  • Perform fusion splicing and testing to include Multi and Single Mode fiber optic cables, Butt splicing, mid-
entry and splice on connectors
  • Work with multiple fiber optic connector types to include SC, LC and ST
  • Work with multiple fiber optic enclosure types, to include rack mount, outside plant, aerial and

underground

  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex fiber optic connections
  • Physically install, move, test and verify fiber optic connections for inside and outside plant
  • Work from bucket truck and lifts as necessary
  • Use testing and troubleshooting tools such as OTDR, VFL and power meter
  • Responsible for coordination and accuracy of ongoing fiber mapping documentation
  • Report to management using various tools such as auto CAD, Visio, fiber management software and tools
  • Provide problem-response of fiber optic systems and perform needed system changes
  • Respond to fiber damage events, perform splicing repairs of fiber optic cables
  • Manage individual and group efforts for the documentation and reporting of all information concerning

damages when they occur

  • Coordinate and provide training to team members on fiber optic cabling standards
  • Maintain company equipment and vehicle
  • Maintain safety standards as applicable to company, city, county, state and federal standards
  • Maintain inventory control of warehouse materials
  • Performs other related duties as deemed necessary as requested


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a Regular Full-time position, requiring at least 40 hours per week, or 2080 hours per year. Employee may be required to work
after hours, weekends, special events and/or on call. Upon successful completion applicable probationary period employee may be
eligible for an increase in pay, subject to budgetary restriction. Employees will be required to work on-site, no telecommuting. No
provisions for relocation will be provided.
